He's talking about coming back to Iowa and New Hampshire, and he already has a PAC called Keeping America's Promise (really? Bush won't be around then). I say that if he runs for the primaries he should give up his senate seat.

He doesn't have a large support base, his votes were anybody but Bush!

Since Senatorial Primaries are later than Presidential ones, he can lose in the Presidential primaries and still run for Senate...

I wouldn't mind seeing John Kerry run again.  After all, I voted for him in 2004.

Erc, how well-liked is John Kerry as a Junior Senator? and when is Ted Kennedy going to retire?

Kerry should run for re-election in the Senate.

Well, I'm not a Mass. native, so I don't know too much about the politics here...but the guy's certainly popular here.  No one's going to challenge him in the primaries, and no Republican has a chance against him in the general.

No Republican has won a Senate race in Mass. since '72...and the closest anyone has gotten since were in '84 (when John Kerry was elected the first time) and '94 (when Mitt Romney came "close" to beating Ted Kennedy).

As for Ted...it seems that he's going to run again in '06...although I really can't see him serving more than one more term.  It's possible, though...he's only 73 now (remember, he was elected to the Senate at the age of 30.)

That means Ted will be 80 or 81 by the time his term expires in January 2013.  That seems to me that he would retire from the Senate in 2012, especially after serving 50 years.  (He would be 86 or 87 by 2018, when the next term would expire).

He'll run and be one of the jokes in the primary. And there will be no amazing comeback this time, either.

How can you say no when he pretty much said that he'll be a candidate already?

He won't be a joke. He cares too much about his self-image to do a Kucinich or a Sharpton. If he can't win, and he realizes it, he won't run.

There were points in 2004 where Kerry was polling just barely above both of those candidates and he didn't drop out.

No one was very strong then. He correctly figured Dean was a ticking time bomb, knew Clark couldn't run a good campaign, etc. He wasn't running against anyone special.

Dean and Gephardt were in a battle for Iowa when Kerry was polling so poorly. How can you argue they weren't strong?

Gephardt didn't run, Dean would've won iowa, and vice versa. Kerry won (in my opinion) because Gephardt and Dean cancled each other out.

Correct.

Dean had some talent and Gephardt is exactly the kind of Democrat that could win in the mid-West, IA, OH, MO, and even WV.

One thing I've taken from the early polling is that it doesn't look good for John Kerry on the Democratic side.  Seems like most partisans don't want him to run again and wouldn't support him if he did.  Kerry is smart enough to realize this and will keep his safe Senate seat.

Was Romney closer to Kennedy in '94 than Weld to Kerry in '96?

No. Romney lost by about 18 while Weld lost by about 8.

when it comes to be 2007 and he realizes that no one wants (of course with a possible ego change) i think hell realize it would be for the good of the party and good of the nation to step out of the race.

I didn't realize that this was about Kerry's re-election to the Senate. I think he'll run for President (as was noted earlier) but not sure if he'll run for re-election to the Senate when the Presidential primaries don't work out.
