WALKER DEAD; SHAKES UP ENTIRE RACE

The unexpected happened in the most tragic fashion this past week: While attending a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, Republican candidate Scott Walker was shot three times in the chest by a lone assassin. Walker would die from his wounds the next hour. The assassin was identified as Martin O'Dalley, a self-described radical from Wisconsin who had a vitriolic hatred of Walker over his stance on unions. With Walker dead, the whole race has suddenly shifted to chaos, particularly over on the Republican side. Condolences from across the spectrum flooded in for Walker's family, and campaigning came to a momentary halt. But as the campaign winds up again, time will tell what effect Walker's death will have going forward.

Some other things to note from the week:

-Jeb Bush has been building up his campaign infrastructure in the early primary states. Will it ultimately pay off for him?
-Jerry Brown has been quickly rising in the polls. Will he eclipse John Kerry to be second place?
-Many candidates from both parties have not campaigned at all this past week. Are they truly committed to winning?

Hillary Clinton 2016-New Endorsements

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes (D-KY)

I know what you're all thinking.... Hillary's a liberal on the environment, go with Manchin. Here's the thing. The type of Democrat that wins here, like Manchin, isn't going to win in November. I want Hillary. because she can make it to November and win. Manchin won't.

New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer (D-NY)

Portland Mayor Michael Brennan (D-ME)

State Representative Bakari Sellers (D-SC)

I know there are some in our community who won't forgive for daring to run against President Obama in 2008. But in order for us to extend his legacy, the best thing to do is let bygones be bygones, and vote for her, in the primary, and next November. It wouldn't be right otherwise.

State Senator Brad Hutto (D-SC)

I'm itching to see us hold the White House, and despite her flaws, I believe Hillary is the best person to do it.

MAJOR KASICH ANNOUNCEMENT

Friends, it's been a long road. Today marks the end of it. After the passing of my dear friend, Gov. Walker, the Campaign Trail is simply too dangerous. I have two beautiful daughters, Emma and Reese, and I would like to be there for them as they graduate high school, go to college, and to eventually give them away at their weddings. With my security feeling threatened, I will withdraw from the race for President. Even though my term as Governor will be over in 2018, I will stay active in politics, and work for the good of Ohio and America. As such, I am proud to endorse my very good friend, Governor Jeb Bush of Florida. Thank you.

Statement from the Kerry Campaign

"It is with heavy hearts that Secretary Kerry has announced that he will no longer be pursuing the Democratic nomination for President of the United States. Citing dangers on the campaign trail and threats against his life, Secretary Kerry has decided it is best for him, his wife, and his family to cease his campaign at this point. However, he is not retiring for politics. He plans to continue on in the Obama Administration and is looking into a bid for Massachusetts Governor in 2018. He thanks those who supported him, especially the Kennedy family."

Hillary Clinton 2016-Schedule for Hillary Clinton

November 5, 2015

Meet Voters, Mad Marv's Place, Fruitland, Iowa

Meet Voters in Nichols, Iowa

Speech at Conesville United Methodist Church, Conesville, Iowa

I've heard some awful rumors from my communications department about people on DailyKos and ThinkProgress comment sections celebrating Governor Walker's death. That's not what America is. These people, who cheered the "demise of the union buster", and put Martin O'Dalley on a pedestal, are among the sickening things I have ever seen anyone say. This behavior is a detriment to our party, and a detriment to our country. We change things we don't like from within, not with an assassins bullet, and those who celebrate it should be questioning why they are living in the land of the free.

November 6, 2015

Meet Voters at El Oasis Mexican, Wapello, Iowa

Meet Voters in Columbus City, Iowa

Tour Danville Museum, Danville, Iowa (With Bruce Braley, Mike Blouin and Michael Gronstal)

Tour Hope Haven Development Center, Burlington, Iowa (With Michael Gronstal and Martha Coakley)

Meat Voters at Hungry Bear, Burlington, Iowa (With Michael Gronstal, Martha Coakley and Wesley Clark)

November 7, 2015

Meet Voters in Houghton, Iowa

Attend Screening/Discussion of Schindler's List at Grand Theatre, Keokuk, Iowa (With Liam Neeson, Ben Kingsley, Steven Spielberg, Helmut Kohl, Bronislaw Komorowski and Anatoliy Kinakh)

November 8, 2015

Speech at Greenwood Genetic Center, Greenwood, South Carolina (With Brad Hutto)

I'm I the only person who finds it strange that Republicans claim to be pro-life, and yet they oppose Stem-Cell research, which many scientists agree will save lives? The reality is, saving the yet-to be born, where anything can and does happen until that baby is out of the womb, is a misplaced priority compared to saving those that are already here.

Meet Voters, Prosperity South Carolina

Speech, Newberry Opera House, Newberry, South Carolina

You know, I met someone recently who told I should watch Othello, that I behave like Iago.(laughter) It's not hard to get jealous when your predecessor has achievements like killing off Osama Bin Laden, pulling us back from a financial abyss, and doing what Bill and I couldn't do twenty years ago, pass a Health Care reform package, all in first term. I'll be lucky if I accomplish anywhere near half that in my first term.

Meet Voters, Little Mountain, South Carolina

November 9, 2015

Meet Voters in Monetta, South Carolina (With Brad Hutto and Bakari Sellers)

Meet Voters, Number One Kitchen, Wagener, South Carolina

Meet Voters in Burnettown, South Carolina

Fundraiser, Marlboro Stadion, Aiken, South Carolina (Also fundraising for Michael Bennett, Patrick Murphy, and Maggie Hassan)

Even if I, Senator Manchin, or Congressman Castro wins in November, we can't do anything without a Democratic Senate, and/or a Democratic House. These three candidates can win next November, and I believe they project values that our party would be proud of.

Meet Voters, Perry, South Carolina

November 10, 2015

Meet Voters, Melissa Roberts Photography, Barnwell, South Carolina (With Bakari Sellers)

Racquetball Tournament fundraiser at Panama City Racquet Club ($2,500 per entrant, 32 entrant minimum- winner receives racquet and ball set, both signed by Hillary, Ronda Rajsich, and Ben Croft)

Meet Voters, Haughty Heron, Port St. Joe, Florida (With Gwen Graham)

November 11, 2015

Tour Carrabelle History Museum, Carrabelle (With Gwen Graham and Janet Reno)

Speech at Apalachicola Maritime Museum, Apalachicola, Florida

Our veterans, on the land, in the air, and at sea, have given so much for us, from the harsh winters at Valley Forge, to reuniting a nation split asunder over slavery, from stopping the Kaiser's army at Belleau Wood, to fighting down Nazis on Omaha Beach, from liberating Kuwait in a hundred hours, to taking down Bin Laden. There sacrifices of family, work and life will be remembered, but the reality is there is nothing we can do to commemorate them, and all they have faced without seeming stingy and ungrateful.

Meet Voters at George Griffin Pottery, Sopchoppy, Florida

Castro Campaign Announcement -
I just got word of Governor Brown's withdrawing of his campaign. First of all, I'd like to congratulate him on his yet another step in his long line of public service, and his fourth term as Governor of California. He has consistently ran for honesty, integrity, and economic security, and practiced it. In this 2016 campaign, he showed all of these traits, while using poise in debates, a willingness to raise difficult questions, and a persistence in working to continually improve our government. Thank you Governor Brown.

Excerpts from Town Halls:

Q: Mr. Quayle, what is your position on the budget deficit?

A: Well, too often we oversimplify the budget deficit, in that a budget deficit is a terrible thing, that's not always the case. But we've had too many years of budget deficits and as a result our debt is rising and our economy is continue to destabilize. What we need to do is curb spending, reevaluate the tax code, and get people working again. We've kept interest rates too low for too long, and with the loss of jobs we have less people paying taxes. So we have a double edged sword coming at us, and it requires a double edged action. We need to cut spending, trim it wherever possible, and streamline the bureaucracy. At the same time we need to get people working again, give incentives for companies to hire workers so we have fewer people on the government dime, and more people paying back into the system.

Q: Mr. Quayle, we've seen rising drug crime, and currently the U.S. has the largest incarceration rate of any country, how would you fix this?

A: For so long we've had the federal government trying to crack down on criminals, and that doesn't work very well. We need the states to be making these decisions on the sentencing of drug crimes. In keeping with that, we need to reduce or eliminate mandatory sentencing, so we don't have these young kids who may make a mistake have their whole lives ruined. We also need to eliminate private prisons, recent studies have shown that those in private prisons stay in those prisons longer and are more likely to commit crimes in the future. So the whole problem can not be solved overnight, but a Quayle administration would work to reduce crime for years to come.

Q: Does this mean you support the legalization of marijuana?

A: I personally do not support it, but I think that the federal government shouldn't try and overrule states that do choose to legalize it. I also do not think that it should be classified as a schedule 1 drug, and that it should be treated more as a medical problem than a criminal problem. But it should ultimately be up to individual states to decide, and if there is a mass legalization, I would support federal regulation and a federal sales tax on it.

Q: Should there be a federal law on the ban or limit of selling semi-automatic firearms?

A: Again a federal law would be an overstep of the U.S. Constitution, and the anyone who proposes a ban on semi-automatic weapons has no idea what they are talking about in terms of firearms. Most firearms on the market are semi-automatics. Also any restrictions on magazines is another non-issue, as most crimes are done with small, concealable weapons, not AR-15s. When it comes to background checks I am not opposed to it, but I would prefer that states are the ones when it comes to regulation and enforcement.

Excerpts from Media Interview:

Q: Mr. Quayle, now that race from the Republican nomination as narrowed as a four-way race between you, Sen. Paul, Fmr. Gov. Bush, and Mr. Trump, what do you think about each of these candidates?

A: *Chuckle* Putting me on the spot, eh? Well when it comes to Senator Paul, I believe he's done a great deal for the party, and for criminal justice reform. He represents a large portion of Libertarian-Republicans and is quite possibly the future of the party. Mr. Bush, I've known him since before he was Governor of Florida, and worked with his father as you know *chuckle*, he seems to be a consensus maker, but his views seem to change quite a bit, and he represents the old wing of the Republican party. He's a good man, but I think the party, and the country is ready for someone besides another Bush. As for Mr. Trump, he knows how to excite a crowd and get them riled up. However his plans for the country are rather vague and simplified.

John King: "The recent rash of candidates departing the race due to the assassination of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, the suspension of your campaign while others go on, and your non-budging poll numbers have lead some observers to believe that you will eventually end your presidential bid altogether. What do you have to say about this?"

Joe Manchin: "You know, John, just as we stated in our press release, we have suspended this campaign out of respect to a fellow candidate who was outrageously assassinated while on the campaign trail, his wife Tonette and sons Matt and Alex. I'm not going to comment about the campaigns still going on as if nothing has happened, especially on the Republican side. I will say this: no candidates should be ending their campaigns due to the threat of extremists. After I became closer to my family this year after the departure of my brother John, it has become tempting to drop out to become closer to my family, however I believe it sends a poor message. It's ceding to extremists to send a message that our political system and candidates will give up in the face of this horrible violence. We must put forward a message of solidarity with the American people and especially Scott Walker's family in this trying time."

John King: "But what do you say about the future of your campaign?"

Joe Manchin: "This campaign, after this week, will return to the trail and return to our tour of every single Iowa county as well as visits across the country. We will continue to the very end of all of the primaries to send a message of real, pragmatic leadership to Democrats in every corner of this great country."
