Considering the 17 presidential elections after the WWII, we can rank the regions according to the number of elected presidents, presidential candidates, and presidential and VP candidates

I observed:
Few candidates from the West
Many losing candidates from the Midwest

For all intents and purposes, the South as a region voted for the winner in every election from 1928-2004 (1928 and 1952 were marginal exceptions). Obama was essentially the first President since Coolidge to get elected while losing practically the entire South.
