Typical northeastern republicans...voted GOP until the mid 80s and then slowly drifted to the Democratic Party.  My granddad was actually a staunch republican who never voted Democratically.  Ironically, the first time he voted for a Democrat at the top of the ticket was the 49 state landslide in '84.  He was a small business owner and thought Corporate America was bad news (who would have known?).  Grandma followed.

My paternal grandfather was about as staunch of a Swedish Social Democrat as you could find, all the way until the day he died. I don't think he ever voted any other way. As for the others, no idea.

Dad's dad died in 1985, but I don't think he ever voted for a Democrat for President once.  I'd be surprised if his wife did either, but she might have voted for Kennedy.

Mom's dad wasn't from Maine, so he didn't have the GOP "in his genes" (in fact he didn't move to Maine until the '50s).  He probably voted Republican until FDR-Truman then for Eisenhower twice, JFK-LBJ-Humphrey then probably GOP three times before his death.  His wife was pretty solidly Republican, I doubt she ever voted Democrat.

I'll give a little bit of background on each.

DAD'S DAD (1933-Present)
His parents (my great grandparents) were born in the US just a few years after their families immigrated here from Germany.  Both of his parents were Lutheran.  They raised my grandpa in Peoria, IL in a fairly upper-middle class family; my grandpa's dad owned several small businesses.

He actually told me over Christmas that he has never voted for a Democrat in a single Presidential election (1956-2012), and neither did his dad; his dad called FDR "The Great Destroyer," LOL.  He is a very moderate Republican for his age and was pretty active in the Civil Rights Movement.  I think he has a lot of issues with the modern GOP, but he has never stopped viewing Democrats as the party of Robin Hood, so to speak.

DAD'S MOM (1943-Present)
Her parents (my great grandparents were also born in the US just a few years after their families immigrated here from Germany and England, respectively.  She was also raised in Peoria, IL.  Her dad was the son of a farmer but never really took to it; I am not sure what he did.  Her mom did not work.  She was also raised Lutheran.

I don't think she's very political, but I would be surprised if she's ever voted Democrat, too (1964-2012).

MOM'S DAD (1938-2012)
Both of his grandparents were Swedish immigrants, so their family was 100% Swedish Lutheran.  He was raised in Kewanee, IL.  He held several blue collar jobs while my mom was growing up, including being a milkman, until he eventually bought into the local Dairy Queen.

He was not very political - or at least not very partisan - and was the classic swing voter.  I'd guess his voting went like this:

1960 - JFK
1964 - LBJ
1968 - Humphrey
1972 - Nixon
1976 - Carter
1980 - Reagan
1984 - Reagan
1988 - Bush
1992 - Clinton
1996 - Clinton
2000 - Bush
2004 - Bush
2008 - McCain (He always liked McCain)

MOM'S MOM (1944-Present)
One of her parents was 100% German Luthern and the other was a mix of Eastern European/something random, and they were Catholic.  The Catholicism won out, and I think due to her strict upbringing and going to Catholic schools, she's become less religious and more spiritual over the years.  She's fairly culturally conservative ("My ancestors waited in line to get to this country and were denied several times, why should we let immigrants cut in line now?"), but she's very fiscally populist and describes herself as a Democrat until the day she dies.  She still sees them as the party that looks out for the little guy, though she has been rather disenchanted by the string of tickets involving Kerry, Obama and Obama; she sees them as elitist and condescending toward people like her.  I'd guess her voting went like this:

1968 - Humphrey
1972 - McGovern
1976 - Carter
1980 - Carter
1984 - Mondale
1988 - Dukakis
1992 - Clinton
1996 - Clinton
2000 - Gore
2004 - Kerry
2008 - McCain (not a racist vote but I think definitely a xenophobic vote, as she probably does believe that he's not American, LOL)
2012 - Abstained (she hated Romney)

I'm just guessing for most of them, these are my maternal grandparents (well grandfather mainly). My grandfather was born in March 1929, so the first election he would have been eligible to vote in would have been 1952, and he is sadly deceased since 2010. Cry

1952: Eisenhower
1956: Eisenhower
1960: Kennedy
1964: Unsure, probably Johnson
1968: Humphrey
1972: Unsure, potentially McGovern
1976: Carter
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Bush
1996: Dole
2000: Bush
2004: Kerry
2008: McCain

He always described himself as an "independent" and told me if anyone ever asked me my party I should always say "independent".

His parents were non-religious Finnish socialist immigrants who were strong FDR supporters, and he would say he was a big supporter of FDR and sometimes said he was an FDR Democrat and the Republicans are the "party of the rich", although at some point he changed his registration to Republican and would say that FDR wouldn't recognize the modern Democratic Party.

He definitely did not support the religious right that dominates the modern GOP. He would tell the story growing up as a child in the 1930s of his mother (my great-grandmother) using her hand to explain religion to him and how each finger is pointing up at God, one finger is Christians, one is Jews, one is Muslims, one is Hindus, one is Buddhists, etc. He never went to church and in the 1950s he committed the scandalous heresy of being a Lutheran Protestant marrying a Roman Catholic.

He served in the Navy during the Korean War and was very big on supporting military veterans while at the same time he was mostly anti-war and would often mock that "President Johnson and his 'peace with honor' while our boys were being killed, what a load of sh**t" which made 1964 tough for me, I think he may have voted for Johnson like most of America and then later come to dislike Johnson like most of America.

My grandparents are Indian, but this seems interesting...

Maternal grandmother: Congress (Every election)
Maternal grandfather: Congress (Every election)

Not sure about the history of the paternal grandparents, but they're normally Congress voters. They voted for BJP in 2014 and I wouldn't be surprised in they voted against congress in 1977.

Dad's side: NDP. Support seems to have skipped a generation with me. My Grandmother will sometimes say some bigoted things, but she is very left wing economically. My grandfather worked for the railroad and was unionized.
Mom's side: Not sure. They were in the Orange Order, but my Mom has never mentioned anything about them being prejudiced at all. Growing up, my mother had a gay neighbour (a florist) who provided Pierre Trudeau with roses for his suits.  Since they lived in Sandy Hill, I'd take a guess that they were Liberals.

Maternal Grandparents:

Straight Democratic ticket (with the exception of Reagan in '84).  Would not be too surprised if my grandpa voted for Wallace.

Paternal Grandparents:

Grandpa: straight GOP ticket until 1988 (died in 1990).

Grandma: straight GOP ticket until 2008 and voted for Obama twice.

Paternal Great Grandmother: lived in DC so was ineligible to vote until 1964, she voted straight Republican ticket.

Just doing my dads side.

Grandpa was from a long line of conservative GOP'rs. Almost certian would've never voted for a Dem with the possible exception of JFK

Grandma was a New Dealer as there was ever one. Grew up with the notion of Dems were for the little guy while the GOP was for big busisness. Pro Civil Rights but still very socially conservative (Baptist upbringing factors here). For sure voted Dem till Reagan and not sure after that.

I dunno my Dad's Dad too well on this (or anything for that matter), so I'll just try and piece what I do know. But my maternal grandparents were rural Arizonians, down-on-the-farm type of people. So whichever way Arizona goes is where they go.

My paternal grandmother was the daughter of blue-collar Italian immigrants in Philly.

The only one I know for sure is my maternal grandfather, who has voted Republican in every election since he first voted in 1972. I know for a fact he also voted for Santorum in the 2012 primaries and Huckabee in 2008, although not sure what other primaries he's voted in.

My grandmother has almost always voted straight ticket Republican since 1972. Though she did vote for Tom Wolf for governor this year (metaphorically spit out my coffee when she told me that).

My paternal side of the family originated in the MENA region and never was involved in politics after arriving here, but my maternal grandparents voted like this:

Mom's Mom was a Republican but she described herself as very open-minded and voted for who ever she liked most:

1964: Johnson
1968: Nixon
1972: Nixon
1976: Carter
1980: Anderson
1984: Reagan
1988: Dukakis
1992: Perot
1996: Perot
2000: Nader
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
2012: Johnson

Mom's Dad:
1960: Nixon
1964: Goldwater
1968: Nixon
1972: Nixon
1976: Carter
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1988: Bush
1992: Clinton

Mom's Mom was Straight ticket Democrat for her entire life, so I don't need to fill out all the years. Campaigned for McGovern in 1972. As a citizen of Illinois, she was a super-big supporter of Obama in 2008, and would have voted for him in 2012 had she lived to that point. If she was alive today, she almost certainly would be Ready for Hillary. Mom's Dad was the same, although in his personal views he was more conservative in sort of a reddit way.

Dad's Dad. Kind of the archetypal Reagan Democrat. Likely would be a Tea Partier if he was alive; he would never vote for an African-American.
1948: Truman
1952: Stevenson
1956: Stevenson
1960: Kennedy
1964: LBJ
1968: Humphrey
1972: McGovern
1976: Carter
1980: Reagan
1984: Reagan
1998: Dukakis
1992: Clinton
1996: Dole

Dad's Mom was probably about the same; she was maybe a little more D.

Dad's Dad:
Was a member of the CPSU while that party existed; became a citizen of the Russian Federation. Not sure if he ever voted there. Moved to the USA in 1997, and did not achieve citizenship until several years later. Was quite interested in politics and discussed it with younger me; he tended to vote Democratic for Congress but Republican for President. Passed away in 2010.

1991 (not sure if he voted): Yeltsin
1996 1st round (not sure if he voted): No idea, can easily imagine him voting for several different candidates
1996 2nd round (not sure if he voted): Yeltsin
...
2004: Bush
2008: McCain

Dad's Mom:
The timeline is basically the same as my dad's dad. She has mentioned on numerous occasions that she has never cast a vote in her life, and her opinions basically consist of the belief that there is a Sinister Global Conspiracy that controls everything (including fixing all elections everywhere). Still alive.

Mom's Dad:
Divorced from my grandmother in 1976, immigrated to Israel in 1990, and died there in 1993, so years before my birth. I have never met him and have no idea how he might've voted in the one democratic election he experienced in his life (the Israeli one in 1992).

Mom's Mom:
Was a Ukrainian citizen after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and came to the US in 1995, getting citizenship sometime in the late '90s. Tends to be very right-wing and always votes, so these are easier to guess. Still alive as well.

1991: Kravchuk
1994: probably Kravchuk again, but I'm not sure
...
2000: Bush
2004: Bush
2008: McCain
2012: Romney

First two are from Mississippi.  My mother's parents are a bit more complicated.  My grandfather on my mother's side grew up in Pennsylvania, but he now lives in New Orleans and is quite involved in the art/antique scene there.  My mother's mother is a bit eccentric and as always had this weird Fundamentalist Christian meets pacifist mentality.  She's a fan of Obama, but she converted to Mormonism in 2006 or so.
