Rockefeller/Laxalt 318
Carter/Mondale 220

POD is Ford is assassinated by Squeky Frome. Reagan opts out of running in 76 out of respect but as a sop to conservatives Rocky picks Laxalt as his running mate.

Rockefeller would not win a Republican primary in 1976, nor would he win a general election.

Keep in mind that he's riding a wave of sympathy following a presidential assassination. Also keep in mind what a sympathetic and tragic figure Ford would be ITTL. The victim of random violence who'd wound up president at the wrong time when he hadn't even sought the office.

Wouldn't Rocky be eligible to run again in 1980, butterflying away health concerns assuming Ford was assassinated after January 20, 1975?  If so could he win?

I was assuming he'd die around the same time as OTL. Even if he didn't by 80 he'd likely be challenged by conservatives within the party, probably Reagan.

This, but I think he'd have a shot at MD and MA.  Carter might be able to take MO and/or IA; all four states would probably be tossups though
