Dukakis won 820 counties in 1988. Obama won 693 in 2012. I don't have much to add. I Just think that is so interesting.

Carter in '80 won more than either...mainly due to Georgia.

That's really interesting. It shows that you don't have to win many counties in order to win a Presidential election.

That is quite indicative of the polarization the US is going through.

And Stevenson beats all of the above.

1988 was an odd election. Dukakis would have won ND, SD, MT and just barely lost KS and NE in a 50/50 election. The farm crisis pissed off alot of rural farming states at the Republicans in power.

Look at how Dukakis won Iowa and Wisconsin solidly while getting blown out nationally. Bush still had the appeal in the Northern suburbs though that have trended hard Democratic since 1992.

It's also interesting that Dukakis carried a zillion counties in Kentucky while losing the counties with Louisville, Lexington, and Frankfort. He won Owen County, of all places.

They'll vote for a swarthy Greek Yankee Harvard grad, but not for a Colored Boy Harvard grad.

Do you think people voted against Dukakis at all for being swarthy ? I mean I could see a lot of people questioning if he was a ''real american''.
