I think we can all agree that it's pretty much a total failure. How would you change it?

It’s a failure for two main reasons.
The SBA’s weren’t withdrawn from circulation.
The dollar bills weren’t withdrawn from circulation.

Do both of those and the current dollar coin would easily circulate.

Get rid of all small currency and give everyone a government-issued debit card.

The dollar coin won't work...I hate carrying change.  Where am I supposed to fit big coins in my wallet?

I like the idea, though the 'government issue' part makes me wary.

I agree. For one I hope that never happens. Far to much control of the money by the government for my liking.

Um, why not simply use the debit card issued by your bank?

Personally, I use my debit card for almost everything.  But I need a seperate debit card for my bank, my school accounts, my subway fare, etc.  It would be nice if there was a national standard.  I'm not suggesting the government control the money placed on a debit card, just a uniform format.

That's the idea I like - uniform format.  I don't like the government involvement here, but if the government doesn't control its running or production, then who does?

I don't see what the problem is, virtually any merchant accepts Visa or Mastercard nowadays.

Except for those tiny mom and pop shops who only take cash.

I don't see why that's such a big deal. I keep plenty of cards in my wallet, though most of them are useless (library card, school ID, etc.).

Is it just me, or did it seem like people were just collecting those coins and not spending them?

I certsainly spend them and get rid of them as fast as possible.  It sucks when you buy a L.I.R.R. ticket or a Metrocard from the machine for the subway and you get eight bricks for change.  I hate having an boatload of change rattling around in my pocket.

That's because they never took off. I would make the dollar coin the size of the silver eagle, but made out of the same metal as the "golden" Canadian coin.

On one side put a "random" president's face (same deal as with the state quarters), and on the other side put that sweet eagle thing:

Eight dollar coins are like eight bricks to you?

how would you withdraw them from circulation?  make them null and void?  dont third world governments do that kind of thing?

you could pull dollar bills from circulation after they get worn, but that process would take years to remove them all.

bottom line, people prefer dollar bills over dollar coins.

The way you pull them from circulation is that you have banks send them into the fed whenever they get them deposited, and then refuse to hand out more.  People will hoard whatever the fed can't collect, and it will be gone in a few years.

Just think: 90 years ago, a nickel used to be worth today's dollar. Our change is pretty much worthless now.

We should just kill off cents entirely, except for a 20 cent coin (to replace the penny). Then I think we should make a $1 coin (to replace the nickel), a $2 coin (to replace the dime), and a $5 coin (to replace the quarter).
