Those two are some seriously weird counties...

In the 1964 landslide when Johnson won California 59-41,  Alpine went Goldwater 58-42 and Mono, 56-44. When Nixon narrowly beat Kennedy four years earlier, 50-50, Mono voted Nixon 66-33 and Alpinewent Nixon by a staggering 77-23! And now they're Dem counties in a sea of landslide Republican counties.

It seems in many cases that some of the most staunchly Republican counties in the Nixon-Goldwater era have flipped over by 2004...

Going back even further... Alpine was 72 percent for Hughes, 91 percent for Harding, 88 percent for Coolidge, and 94 percent for Hoover. That county was insanely Republican, and for quite a long time it was the most Republican in the state, by far.

I think one of these counties is Mormon-majority.

You're thinking of Alpine... 45 percent are Mormon, and most of the rest are atheists, IIRC. Very strange.

Hey, the Mormons are enough to drive the God out of anyone. Wink

45% Mormon, 5% Jewish and the rest unaffiliated. Very strange.

...according to that religious census...which doesn't include the NAC. 20-25% of Alpine's population (which is rather minuscule) are Washoe Indians (even though there's no reservation), and they were the first peyotist community in the Pacific West. Reason being, obviously, that they are not culturally of the Pacific West.
There are a few more...I posted a list somewhere...I think there's two in Colorado, one of which voted for Perot in 92 IIRC, and there's more in Virginia as well: Albemarle County and Danville City, both of which voted Democratic for the first time since 1948, and Fairfax City. Possibly one more that I'm forgetting.

The two in Colorado are La Plata and San Juan. Oddly, neither of the two voted for George Bush sr in 1992, one going Perot, the other Clinton.

And, yes, the complete list has been mentioned.
I'll repost em in a single post:

Marion, IN
Charles, MD
Fairfax, VA
Fairfax (city), VA
Albemarle, VA
Danville (city), VA
Orange, FL
La Plata, CO
San Juan, CO
Alpine, CA
Mono, CA

I decided to post the results to display how they changed over time:

Marion, IN (Indianapolis) - Kerry +2, Dole +3
Charles, MD (La Plata) - Kerry +2, Dole +5
Fairfax, VA (D.C. Suburbs) - Kerry +7, Dole +1
Fairfax (city), VA - Kerry +3, Dole +5
Albemarle, VA (Charlottesville) - Kerry +2, Dole +4
Danville (city), VA - Kerry +0, Dole +6
Orange, FL (Orlando) - Kerry +0, Dole +0
La Plata, CO (Durango) - Kerry +7, Dole +9
San Juan, CO - Kerry +8, Dole +5
Alpine, CA - Kerry +9, Dole +1
Mono, CA - Kerry +0,  Dole +7

Swings range from barely anything (Orange County, FL) to 16 (La Plata County, CO).

danville virginia has had a serious case of white flight.

take a look at the voting results for caswell county nc, just to danville's south.  its trend is going in the opposite direction.

Acctually, it is probably quite the other way around.  The Mormans moved in, seeing an oppertunity

Mormons have been in the Alpine area for over a hundred years.

Note that these figures do not prove that there are not any other Christians in the county - there simply are no other churches. There may be people who worship across the county line. In fact, I would bet there are.
