Are there any hymns that are exclusive or specific to your denomination (or another) that you wish could be used more in others?

The reason I ask this today is because at my church this morning, the opening song was "Cover with His Life," which is an SDA hymn written by Franklin Belden (James and Ellen White's nephew).  Although I think the title is a little misleading (Christ doesn't just cover our sins, he removes them), I think it's a great song that I wish had more mainstream use.

Another Adventist hymn I feel this way about is "We Have This Hope."

I suppose it depends upon what one means by "cover" and "remove", but it's fairly standard theology that Christ interposes his own self and takes the consequences of our sins upon himself.  We are thus removed from the consequences of sin, but not from the sin itself.  That's not quite my view.  In my view Christ doesn't remove sins, but rather helps lead us to realize that despite those sins, God still loves us.  It's sort of similar, but differs because of the difference in viewpoint in how sin separates us from God.  In the more traditional theology sin separates us from God because God judges our sin and views us as unworthy of God.  In my own view sin separates us from God because we judge our sin and view ourselves as unworthy of God.

But back to the thread topic.  While UU does have some original hymns, I'll be honest and admit a fair portion are genericized versions of hymns from other sources.

I doubt it would ever happen but it would nice to hear some Hillsong United at a Catholic mass.

The church I go to here in Wisconsin does that sort of thing at one of its Masses. I'm not sure if they play Hillsong, but they definitely have played Chris Tomlin songs before. All of their songs are that sort of style. I don't know a ton about which ones they play since I generally don't go to that Mass if I can avoid it. Tongue

As for the question, there are a gazillion of them that are only used in the Catholic Church. Pretty much all of the stuff still sung in Latin for starters, though a few of the popular Christian songs that are done across all denominations were originally in Latin.

Whether other denominations use them or not, I don't have a very strong opinion one way or another. It would probably be good for all Christians to sing Attende Domine sometime, but if they forego it there are more important problems in Christianity to worry about than that (or the music in general).
