My prediction: Benedict XVI

Papal names are somewhat interesting to look into.  Each pope may have an obvious reason (or a not-so-obvious reason) for choosing a certain name by which he'll be known throughout his papacy.

I've got my own, more complicated reasons for predicting Benedict XVI.  You can see my website for a better explanation :-)

A lot of those "prophecies" have to be waay streched to fit the respective Pope. Plus, there is speculation about they ebing ghost-written.

True.  All prophecies and a certain amount of scripture have to be stretched to fit society and culture.

Don't read to much into it.  I just think it's fun to bet on what the next name will be :-)

And no, I doubt it'll be Pope Sexy!

Statistically, parts of such a large prophecy will come true simply because of the Laws of averages and ones desire to see the patterns described.

I am still hoping for a Pope Adrian VII.

I’m hoping but certainly not counting on a Papa Francesco or perhaps a Papa Pius Francesco.  Leo XIV or Benedict XVI would be nice as well.  Given the current collection of Cardinals, I strongly doubt the next one will call himself John XXIV.

Pope Mohammed I - all depends on who's chosen!

Actually, I'm partial to Alexander.

The last

John Paul 2005 (II)
Paul 1978 (VI)
John 1963 (XXIII)
Pius 1958 (XII)
Benedict 1922 (XV)
Leo 1903 (XIII)
Gregory 1846 (XVI)
Clement 1774 (XIV)
Innocent 1724 (XIII)
Alexander 1691 (VIII)
Urban 1644 (VIII)
Sixtus 1590 (V)
Marcellus 1555 (II)
Julius 1555 (III)
Adrian 1523 (VI)
Callistus 1458 (III)
Nicholas 1455 (V)
Eugene 1447 (IV)
Martin 1431 (V)
Boniface 1404 (IX)
Celestine 1294 (V)
Honorius 1287 (IV)
Lucius 1185 (III)
Anastasius 1154 (IV)
Callistus 1124 (II)
Paschal 1118 (II)
Victor 1087 (III)
Stephen 1058 (X)

Some of these names are out of the running.
The last time there has been a Pope Stephen was 1058.
The biblical Stephen was a Christian martyr.
My guess is Pope Stephen XI.

Ah, cool list - thanks for posting.  There were some really interesting names going way back like Telesphorus, Severinus, and Hilarius.  But, those were all one-time names and are unlikely picks for the new pope

Hoping for a John XXIV. Most likely is probably Paul VII, actually. Leo XIV is quite possible and would be nice. Francis is a good idea too, actually. Assisi anyone?

Have there been nine Malcolms?

Then we could have Pope Malcolm X, so the church could modern-up its image a bit and play to the X-crowd.  Like in that movie "Dogma"

Yo, Papa-G Malcolm X in tha Hizzouse!  (funky background music)  Maybe change the white robes to deep purple.  With a little propeller on the skullcap like Elroy Jetson.  Oh, and a big Clock hanging around the neck instead of a crucifix.

Certainly would appeal more than the last one:

cute.  did you see that article in the WSJ about putting astrophysics and quantum mechanics lessons in lyric set to gangsta rap tunes?  very catchy.  Like Weird Al, but on steroids.  Oh, wait, weird al was on steroids.  Anyway, if you like physics, and you like rap music, you'd love that article.  About 2 weeks ago, I think.  Next to an article about Walmart stocks.  Walmart, physics, and rap music.  That was a well-read page in my house.

Unfortunately I like neither rap or physics, but the idea of fusing them sounds....interesting.  I have a mental image of Eminem or 50 Cent swapping lyrics about killing people and having more money than they need for lyrics about wave-particle duality and Planck's constant.

I know it doesn't sound too pope-ish but I had always though Evan would make a good name (It means 'gracious gift of God')

With the choice of the name Benedict St. Malachy's prophecy is seemingly continuing to be fufilled! Rapture anyone? (oh, and please don't make this into another "What will you do after the rapture?" thread)
