Many on here will know that in recent elections, Georgia was the only state with no polarization across age groups.

In 2008, Jim Martin lost the 18-29 age group by one point in 2008, and lost the 65+ age group by two points.

In 2012 Nunn won the 18-29 cohort 18 points, a 19 point shift  in margin. This is also significantly greater than the national margin of 11 points.

Meanwhile Nunn only garnered 35% of the 65+ vote, a 27 point shift in margin and much worse than Democrats did with that age group nationally.

What happened in Georgia that changed it from the only state without polarization by age, to perhaps the most polarized state?

These things weren't true in 2008?

I noticed this in the exit polling, too; I think it's too big of a gap to be an error. It's really odd to see the differences between this election and 2008 in terms of exit polling; I always told people that Georgia is primarily divided by race and not by age in this regard. With that being said, perhaps young whites are more inclined to vote for white Democrats...or maybe the landscape is finally shifting.

You just showed us two pictures, both full of Democrats.  What's your point?

Not enough people are thinking about presidential realigning periods and where some people's respective demographics fit.

With 2008 marking the most recent one, for the Democrats, the previous one came in 1968, for the Republicans.

Election Day 1968 was Tuesday, November 5, 1968. Those born November 4, 1949 or earlier are now in the 65 and over group as they voted in the midterm elections of 2014 on November 4, 2014.

They were there for the Republican realigning presidential election of 1968. They most certainly were there for Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984. And they're still present here in 2014.

And apparently so can you, by automatically assuming that all the black people in that photo are Democrats. Roll Eyes

First of all, you're the one who brought race into this.  The OP referenced polarization about age and posted a picture of one old person and then a bunch of young people.  The younger group, based on exit polls, is much more Democratic.  The woman (who we all know) is a known Democrat.

So no, I did not make any assumptions on race, I addressed the claim that is the point of this thread - that Georgia is polarized by age.  And IndyTexas posted a picture of an old person (implying they vote Republican) who was a Democrat and a bunch of young (and yes, diverse) people, implying they are more Democratic (and more Democratic than the older generation).
