So, Shumlin will obviously be reelected with no problems, but polls have shown him with a fairly unimpressive margin of victory - +12 or +17 - especially considering that the GOP candidate he's up against is a quasi-nobody. Why isn't he winning in some huge landslide? Is there anything that he's done which makes him less popular?

It's probably just because it's going to be bad year for incumbents everywhere (especially Democratic incumbents).

Vermont has never lost their affection for Republicans.

Probably all that single-payer ridiculousness. Had we gotten a semi-prominent state Senator (or Scott, or even Dubie again), this would be a race.

Only because there is a progressive candidate on the ballot.

Vermont has a preference for GOP governors, although Shumlin has managed to overcome it so far.  His first victory against Lt Gov Brian Dubie was 49-47.

Shumlin's final campaign rally was for abortion rights.  Dubie's was for "jobs."

The far left Independents are probably hurting him.

Well, moderate Republicans still exist, there's a Progressive party here and Shumlin has behaved rather left-wing.

I also get the impression from his rhetoric that his style is more aggressive than conciliatory, so he may be the sort of figure who alienates non-partisans.

If there comes a day when the GOP is not seen as THAT much more socially conservative (or at least if it becomes much less nativist than it is now) than the Democrats, VT, NH and ME will return to the Republican fold.  I've said that a ton of times.

Governors serve two-year terms in Vermont. Shumlin is running for his third.

Silly me, for some reason I forgot he was elected for the first time in 2010.

Things seem to be reverting to form, but Shumlin continues to underwhelm here.
