Can't believe San Diego, San Bernardino, and Riverside all voted against this superb governor.

I like how Jerry Brown basically didn't campaign at all and still wins in a huge landslide in a horrible year for Democrats.

Never change California, FF state.

Jerry Brown considering his superb record by all rights should have won 2/3 of the vote-the fact that he underperformed Kasich is unbelievable.

Well Kasich actually campaigned for re-election, is the difference. Plus Kasich's opponent was an absolute joke, instead of just a half joke.

San Diego caught me off guard. But Riverside and San Bernardino just suffered from extremely poor turnout.

All of California suffered from poor turnout but it really affected the result in Southern California and the Central Valley. In the end Brown should carry SD county when everything is counted but the margin of victory for Kashkari in San Bernardino is quite shocking. I am surprised Aguilar could hang on in that environment.

Wait until the votes are counted to talk about turnout.

True. The numbers could move a lot. Exit polls are still showing almost a 21 point win for Brown. Still, San Bernardino will likely be a Kashkari county even after the count is done. That is pretty surprising considering Brown's margin of victory. Where Brown really overperformed is in the Sacramento area and the Bay Area to a lesser extent.

Now this will make California look bad. They don't even know there's a governor's election.

When the economy is doing so well in your state, why would you care to vote?

Brown has retaken the lead in San Diego County. Surprisingly, I doubt he'll be able to take Riverside or San Bernardino Counties. From the way it looks, Merced looks to be the only obvious gain from what he doesn't have right now (and perhaps maybe, Del Norte). At this point, it seems like the true saviour for the left in California is the Bay Area and Sacramento. SoCal seems to have experienced a less-severe version of this year's turnout drop-off. I think NorCal has definitely been the firewall against the past two Republican midterm waves.

WTF happened in Lassen County? Kashkari lived around Lake Tahoe for awhile when he decided to go all mountain man, but that isn't Lassen...

I remember it gave the largest margin of any county to recall Gray Davis. I don't know why, but it occasionally seems to give an ultra-Republican result.

It's the same thing as Virginia, low turnout among Democrats amplifies the Republican percentage.

Lassen County is one of a number of traditionally working class counties in the West that ditched the Democratic Party in the 90s due to industrial decline, the death of the Greatest Generation and the Democratic Party's preoccupation with the environment and social issues.

Look at Clearwater County in Idaho or Coos County in Oregon and you'll find the same trend: retired/former loggers hate the Democratic Party.

Lewis County in Washington is another example.

Lassen County has indeed become very Republican, typically only second to Modoc County. I wonder if he was pointing out the swing from 2010. If anything, the result this time was a reversion to the norm. The better question I have is how Brown managed to hold Whitman to a 50%-42% margin four years ago. It'd be one thing if it was typical of the area, but it was quite the anomalous result in far Northern California.

Lassen voted for Torlakson though, fwiw. Non-partisan race though, but still.
