So you think they're endorsing him just to jump on the winning bandwagon? What would be the point of that?

Their reasoning, I suspect, is that Coakley has proven herself to be such a weak candidate that they're worried she'd lose reelection in 2018, potentially to someone quite a bit more conservative than Baker is. So they think it's better to cut their losses and endorse Baker, then (if he's elected) his opponent in 2018. Same reason they endorsed Tisei over Tierney in 2012, pretty much.

This actually makes a lot of sense, especially looking at their other endorsements (Yes on Bottle Deposit, Yes on repealing the casino law, etc.) and after reading their election coverage. This is shocking, considering how anti-Baker their op-ed section has been over the course of the past 2 months.

She really is a special kind of disaster to pull off The Globe endorsing a Republican.

So five years later and the machine still prefers a Pub over Coakley?

Well I mean Martha Coakley is lazy, horrifically entitled, and less inspiring than a slice of bread left out in the rain for a day. So yeah.

Don't Republicans usually insist that newspaper endorsements mean nothing? Some consistency would be nice.

They don't, unless it's a left-wing paper endorsing a Republican or vice-versa. Then they still probably don't make much of an impact, but for the shock value for us political junkies.

It takes a special kind of Democrat not to get the Boston Globe endorsement. Quite an accomplishment by Coakley.

The Globe has a new owner, John Henry. It wouldn't surprise me if that causes more idiosyncratic endorsements than in the past.

This is hilarious, and yet sort of disturbing. As has been said, newspaper endorsements don't decide elections, but one can't help but think that if the Boston freaking Globe can go for a Republican, anything is possible on election day. It's not over yet, though. Interesting turn of events.

What a joke of a state. Matthew Coakley (D) would be sailing to an easy victory right now.

Will you stop with this desperate BS?  Massachusetts has elected several Republican governors.  Is Rhode Island racist because they're currently favoring a White Democrat over an Asian Republican?

So Coakley is joining the ranks of a sacrificial lamb and a crook?

Was Tierney himself ever actually implicated in any wrongdoing?  I was under the impression that it was guilt by association due to scandals involving his wife and two brother-in-laws.

I'm actually rooting for Martha Coakley now. I've become amused at how awful of a politician she is and I want to see what kind of chaos she will bring to Massachusetts. Baker is just a boring moderate dude who will be beholden to the legislature. Boring. Martha Coakley for governor.

So you intentionally want the evil option?

This is kind of the exact reason I'm endorsing Baker

Coakley has finally earned a newspaper endorsement, from the far-left Herald News from Fall River, and their argument is basically vote for Coakley because she is a woman.

Looks like the Herald News is the sole bulwark against the pervasive sexism in Massachusetts. What freedom fighters.
