Historical fact : The person usually announced to be "favored" has never in fact become the pope.

Just out of curiousity, what is the appropriate way to refer to cardinal?

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger or Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger

Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger.  Because cardinals are considered so important, the name actually changes.  This has been suggested to date from I time before surnames, but from what I've read, this style dates only from the 17th Century.

Roman Catholic Archbishop named John Doe, not a cardinal, would be addressed as "The Most Reverend, John Doe, Archbishop of [See]," and personally addressed "Your Excellency."

If Doe was elevated to cardinal, he becomes, "His Eminence, John Cardinal Doe, [Ecclesiastic post, e.g "Archbishop of [See]"]."  I should note that, except by papal dispensation, all cardinals are bishops.

I couldn't picture a worse name. I could live with another Leo, though.

It's going to be someone we have never heard of or know very little about.

You don't exactly have to be a member.  Hell, the French are barely members, and they get a vote. Wink

Second and third ballots no election.  Third ballot appears to be black, according to Vatican Radio.  No bells, yet.

And the bells aren't the six-o-clock bells.  It appears to be official.

About how long will it take to get him all gussied up and ready for presentation?

I am truly surprised by the rapid choice, altho I am not surprised that Ratzinger was the result of a quick election.  It appears that the conclave decided on an old pope who is likely to provide continuity of existing policy while they mull over which direction the churcg taks next.

I did some checking on the chosen name's history...most of those 15 earlier Benedict's are Dark Ages and High Middle Ages. There was one who was reputedly elected at the age of 12, and later sold the office to a rival. Anyways, it's the last two Benedicts that make the name a viable choice:
Benedict XIV was an 18th century pope who was considered very tolerant and enlightened for a Catholic cleric of the time (Voltaire has some kind words about him, apparently) and combatted the influence of the Jesuits.
Benedict XV was pope during World War I and several times tried to broker a peace. Then again, he is also responsible for that silly insult of making Jeanne d'Arc a saint.

This was Benedict IX, who was pope for three different terms; he was excommunicated some time after he sold his office.

Hmmm... not too fond of Joan of Arc, huh?
