I call people living near me rednecks, but I guess the stereotypical white Southerner could be called that too.

I've never used the term "Nascar dads" outside of a political campaign type discussion.  "He'll never appeal to Nascar dads," but even that isn't exclusive to Southerners.

Exactly me as well.

I refer to them as "rural, conservative white southerners."

Options 1, 2, 4, 6, and 7 assume something about their person not implied by "rural, conservative white southerners."

Option 5 is really meant to refer to poor, southern white farmers (out in the sun, so they end up with red necks, originating the phrase.)

Option 3.  There's nothing wrong with white, rural conservative southerners.

In Missouri, redneck is just a rural conservative guy.  Not necessarily poor - in fact people talk about 'rich rednecks'.  For white trash some Missourians use the term 'hoosiers' - mostly a St. Louis region term, and not to be confused with Indianans.  White trash or hoosiers probably do not vote, and are dangerous, volatile people.

Rednecks are generally very hostile to anyone different from themselves, and there is some potential for danger, but they are less likely to take risks because they have something to loose.

Basically every small town is made up of rednecks and hoosiers - say 50/50.  The rednecks are the ones in the churches, the hoosiers are the ones in the honky-tonks (though there is some overlap here).  Rednecks may own farms, small businesses, or drive to the city for lower-middle to middle class blue collar or lower white collar jobs, while their wives will usually work more locally in lower end white collar jobs.  Working 'down-at-the-courthouse' is commonplace. Hoosiers will generally work sporadically, as laborers, clerks, at walmart, get a few food stamps, make meth, etc.  Their wives will work as clerks at convenience stores, at walmart, in restuarants.  There are some difference in appearance as well, centering on grooming, hair length, and traditionality of attire.  There will also often be 2-3 families of bankers or lawyers who manage to stand above the redneck level.

Redneck isn't really supposed to be an insult. It means you have worked so hard under the hot sun that your neck is red.

Though you generalize a lot in this post. I think you got some of it right. However your idea that "the religious" want to take over is ridiculous.

Thanks.  I do think I know my origins to some extent.

I do find that world stultifying, and tend to be a little befuddled by, and suspicious of, those that do not.  Particularly when they denounce people who are different from them, as you do with gays, States.

If I heard more tolerant speech coming from the religious, I probably wouldn't be so concerned about their influence.  But ya'll do cling to your hatreds.

The prime current example is hatred of homosexuals.

You're generalizing, unless you don't consider me a Southerner.

I was generalizing about religious, not southerners, though the two do overlap a great deal.

Would you consider me a religious, then?

Actually I have no idea, but I suppose it is highly likely.

OK, let's suppose that I have a religion other than atheism, which effectively makes me a "religious."  I'm also from a Southern state, specifically one from the "Deep South."  Since being a Southerner and being a "religious" go hand in hand, I hate homosexuals, correct?

You don't hate homosexuals?  How about allowing them to marry?

Another generalization.  First off, not allowing them to marry doesn't mean you hate them.  Second, I do support gay civil unions.  (Actually, I favor civil unions for both straight and gay couples, as I believe the government shouldn't have anything to do with marriage.)
