Dazzleman more than anyone else.  Very smug, self-congratulatory economic conservative from the upper-middle class.  Probably somewhat more handed to him on a silver platter than Dazzleman though.

Thanks for the compliments. Smiley  I guess you're the odd man out in your family?

Of course, the terms smug and self-congratulatory could be applied to you too, but who's counting?

I have nothing to be smug about.  But in fairness I believe you are in the right in claiming some credit for your success, though I think you tend to underestimate outside factors.  I certainly believe you have 'worked hard', though I tend also to believe nearly all of the working class does so, at every pay level.  My brother by contrast 'works' an average of a couple of hours a day.

I'm well aware of outside factors, and I know I've been fortunate in many ways.  Still, I have had to work to get anything.  I have no income other than my own work, and may or may not get a modest inheritance.  I don't really care whether I get an inheritance in any case.

I may underestimate outside factors, but I think you overestimate them.  Success if a combination of luck and effort.  Luck, as in being born to the right parents, having access to education, having some natural talents, in addition being lucky in terms of job selection.  But luck alone won't do it, unless you come from so much money that you're only working for sake of appearances, which is what it sounds as if your brother is doing.

I wish everybody had good parents, access to good education, strong talents, etc. but it's not within my power, or the power of society in general, to make this happen.  The best we can do is equality of opportunity, taking into account a person' individual circumstances.  I have favored spending money to try to equalize educational opportunity, but even in the best case, that only goes so far.

Oh, not at all.  He got a good deal of money from both our family and his wife's family, as well as the gift of a house, some land, and two or three loans or co-signings to get started, but it was all for him to start his own business.  Certainly not enough to live on.  But as a real estate developer there really isn't much work to do - various professionals and subcontractors do virtually everything.

Younger Brother: Keystone Phil (he likes Santorum.... a lot) or maybe StatesRights... having said that he hasn't started wearing overalls yet so probably Keystone Phil

You got work to do there!  I have a Democratic brother who is btw a history teacher, but VERY pro-life.  He grills me every time I argue that issue.

So effectively, his money's working for him, rather than him working for his money.  That's my definition of rich.  It's a good position to be in, and I'd love to get there one day, but it will be quite a while.
