Hiram Lewis (R), an attorney and National Guard Officer who fought in Iraq, announced his intention to challenge Sen. Robery Byrd. Lewis writes on his webpage that byrd is aligned with the liberal elite, including Kennedy, Kerry, Soros and Hillary Clinton, and that he is not representing the views of West Virginians because the state went to Bush in 2004 by 13%. Republicans are still trying to get Shelley Moore Capito , West Virginia's only Republican member of Congress, to challenge Byrd, but it appears unlikely that she will do so unless Byrd retires.

Would it be possible for Byrd to receive 80% of the vote?

WV as a whole is just simply a personality-cult centered around Byrd.

Bucky Lewis? The guy that couldn't even beat that crooked b*stard Darrell McGraw? (My cat could have beaten McGraw... a blank piece of paper could have beaten McGraw...)
Is this really the best the WV Republicans can do?

This freakin' joker ran for Attorney General in 2004.  Naturally he lost.  He has about zero real work experience.  He JUST got out of law school and then was deployed to Iraq for a year.  He got back and a year later ran for Attorney General.

I heard an interview with him on CSPAN radio.  He was asked why, coming from a heavily Democratic area, he became a Republican.  His answer was "Ronald Reagan reminded me of my grandfather".  When asked to clarify and explain what positions the GOP held that he felt strongly about, the guy just mumbled and rambled on about how he likes different Republican politicians.

Now frankly I don't like Byrd, but I would vote for him ANY day of an idiot like this guy.  If this is the best the WV GOP has to offer then (barring death) Byrd is gonna break Thurmond's record.

I don't understand. To what would Capito challenge Byrd if he retires?

Is Byrd trying to break Strom's record before he even considers retirement?

Well, good luck with that, Hiram. He'll be lucky to get 25 percent; he might be able to carry Grant County, but everywhere else he's toast.

The closest 2000 counties, Grant and Morgan, were both 64-36. Byrd ain't goin' nowhere. Wink

Byrd will break Thurmond's record in the middle of next year. However, if he doesn't run for re-election he sets the record at only 48 years. if Ted Kennedy is still alive in late 2010, he breaks that.
