You couldn't live on welfare if  you are in the US, particularly if you are a single person, as they wouldn't give it to you.  Besides, leisure is no more 'meaningless' than work.  But it is more fun.

We'll see where we are in 30 years.  Study after study have shown that the happiest people are those who felt like they accomplished something meaningful in life.  Sitting on your butt and occasionally going out for a prostitute is not accomplishing something meaningful.

The seven day week was known to many non-biblical cultures including the ancient Persians, Chinese, and pre-Christian Romans.

There are many theories of its origin, but many accept its basis as the closest number of days to a quarter of the natural month. Since many ancient calendars were based on lunar cycles, division of those cycles makes sense.

Personally, I predict opebo is going to die alone and miserable.

I don't care about the length of the week, but we need to move to three days off, four days on, plus more holiday time - say at least 6 weeks per year.
No, I disagree that we need more holiday time.  Holidays often have a religious theme or honor leaders, which could offend many sincere people.  Holidays with a purpose are unconstitutional, and holidays without a purpose are useless because you've got your three-day weekend.

The 7 day week comes from a Judeo-Christian background.  It is right out of the Bible.  Would you be in favor of metricizing the work week to say, 10 days with 2 days off?  Or perhaps some other solution?

Or would you want to keep it like the Bible dictates it to be?

Huh?!

Why don't we do something productive instead...maybe we could reconsider the naming of the colors, or the names of animals, or replace the decimal system with hexadecimals.

Keep the seven day week.  Who's complaining?  God must have known what he was doing, but let's not talk about that.  Someone might be insulted.

I would prefer a 10-day week with 30-day months, but I'm not sure it would be worth the effort changing.

The Jacobin government tried to institute this sort of calendar shortly after the French Revolution, naming the months after the seasonal weather, rather than their Roman names.  Its how we got the term "Thermidorian reaction" due to the counter-revolt that happened during the month of Thermidor...which meant "hot" and was the French revolutionary equivalent of July.  The calendar lasted for over a decade, but I guess never really caught on and was abolished by Napolean.

There was also an effort to establish decimal time (10 hours, 100 minutes, 100 seconds), but this was abandoned much more quickly.

Under that calendar, today's date would be something like :

I'm sure the 40 hour work week was called unrealistic or impractical by Capital 100 years ago.

It is time to move to at least a 32 hour 'full time' week.  And six week vacations.  Why not?

It really isn't worth the effort to change our entire calender, which we have become accustomed to and base our lives around, just because it has religious origin.

Divide 356 by 30, see what happens.

There were five holidays on the French Revolutionary calendar that weren't considered part of the regular week.

Now THAT is cheery! Perhaps accurate but...

Just because something is an unpleasant thought does not mean that it isn't the truth. Smiley
