Well, you have purposive groups that seek to promote a certain ideology, and then influence-oriented groups that give to both parties and keep members via selective benefits (i.e. AARP-- though they don't donate $$). There are all kinds of ways to look at interest groups, depends on what you're trying to measure.

The first division should be whether they are "mass" or "narrow" special interest groups (membership as a criteria).

Then one can divide them as to their focus on either a few issues, or a wide range of issues.

Finally, one can sort them by position.

Most special interest groups have relatively small membership and are concern with a narrow range of issues.
