From the NBC station out of Jackson, Mississippi:

Democratic State Representative Erik Fleming of Clinton plans to run for the U.S. Senate next year.

The 40-year-old lawmaker says that he'll run for Sen. Trent Lott's seat, regardless of whether the longtime Republican congressman seeks another term.

Despite widespread speculation, Lott said in February that he does plan to run again.

Fleming has been in the state House of Representatives since January 1999.

How badly will he do?
Will Lott retire?  (yes.)

If Lott runs, Lott wins.  Think about it, we're talking about MS here.

Agreed, but remind me to tell you why I can't go to Mississippi one day.  :-)

Why wouldn't Lott run? It's not like being in the Senate is actually hard, well if you're not in electoral trouble back home. Obviously he wins with 70%+

Is the Atty General down there in Mississippi, Mike Moore, popular enough to make it close in a race againt Trent Lott?

Hmm, he may gain some votes, and if Lott fails to protect the military bases, Moore might get some momentum, I just don't see Lott losing.  Now, if Lott retired and Pickering ran against Moore, Moore would have a chance then.

Moore in all likelihood won't beat Lott.
If Lott retires, Moore has a shot.  But not that great of one.
But I'll campaign like Hell for Moore either way.

The Republican strategy would be to have everybody in Mississippi watch Fahrenheit 9/11 and make the ballot choice 'for Mike Moore/against Mike Moore'

Obviously someone named Mike Moore isn't going to beat Lott in Mississippi.
