in past years? I know Obama got 97 percent of the vote and Kerry got 93 percent of the vote but does anyone know before that? One thing I've wondered is when was the last time a democrat candidate got below 80 percent? Maybe in the 1920s?

Woah, that seems a bit high even for Detroit. I expected 80's, but 97%?!?!

1920s? lol, it was still majority white until the 1970s.

Obama won Wayne County by 74–25. Walter Mondale won Wayne County by 57–42.

My best guess is Reagan did better than 20% in Detroit, since the city made up over half of Wayne County in 1984.

I don't about Reagan, but I imagine Nixon in 1972 at least cracked 20%, especially considering the city was still majority white then and he did better among black voters than Reagan.

Fuzzy might be able to answer this best, as congressional district results are probably the best numbers we'll get. As you can see here, Nixon got 11% in each of the two presumably black districts in 1968. Detroit, however, had enough people for 4 districts in the 60s.

I'm guessingMondale got at around 80% of the Detroit vote, since both of it's central CD's gave him about 81%-84%.

For McGovern, I'm guessing about 77% or something like that, since there were more whites in the city itself (as you pointed out).

I can get Carter's performance as well, if anyone is interested.  Wink

well one thing i'm wondering is that as far back as the 1950s, is it possible that Adlai Stevenson also won 80 percent in Detroit? Considering that Mondale might have won 80 percent and won Wayne County by the same margin as Stevenson is it possible Stevenson cracked 80 percent?

Still, a lot of Democrats were white  (conservatives, too) back then.

The city would have made up a much larger share of the county then, so no.

I don't know, but I suspect Detroit has not voted Republican for President since 1928 (Wayne County overall went 37/62 for Hoover that year). Detroit's Dem % since 1956:
1956: 62/38
1960: 71/29
1964: 80/20
1968: 71/20/8
1972: 67/31
1976: 74/24 (Ford was from MI)
1980: 78/18
1984: 81/19
1988: 85/14
1992: 87/8/4
1996: 92/5/2
2000: 94/5
2004: 94/6
2008: 97.0/2.6
2012: 97.5/2.1
