My position is, from what I can tell, very different from the norm.  First off, I am pro-choice, and maybe the only pro-choice person here who think that at the moment of conception, it IS a human being with certain rights.  If a person attacks a pregnant woman and kills the baby, I think they should be charged with murder, since, WAY more often than not, the intent was for that child to be brough into the world.  Actually, back about a year and a half ago, I would've considered myself pro-life, even feeling very iffy about abortion in cases of rape.  Today, I'm compeltely pro-choice, even supporting partial-birth abortion which I strongly opposed about 2 years ago.  Basically 2 things brought me to my position today.

1) The realization that the life of an unborn child is not something the government can regulate.  If a woman truely wants an abortion, she will get it.  When it was illegal, there were hundreds of people out there that would do it illegally with dirty tools and unsanitarily.  Women were known to attempt to hurt themselves, even throwing themselves down stairs.  If we start a conservative movement to protect an unborn baby, what's next.  Putting women who had miscarriages on trial questioning what happened?  Throwing them in jail?  We'd all love to be without abortion.  But the bottom line is that, unfortunately, it's necessary.  I know the conservatives will scream adoption, but there are women out there who are just as determined not to have to give birth as they are not to have to raise it.  Without the help of organizations like Planned Parenthood to give them safe procedures, I shudder to think what might happen to some people and what some people might do to themselves.

2)  This one is pretty basic.  If you create a life, you have the right to decide whether or not it is brought into the world.  That simple.  A lot of parents who are not ready to be parents yet would much rather know they just terminated it before it even had it's first conscience thought or breath than to live with the fact that the life they created is out there somewhere and it considers someone else its parents.  I know, because that would just make me cringe.

I'm often back and forth on the issue, so I try to avoid it.  Very touchy and extremely hard to find a clear position on either way IMO.

When a mother gets pregnant, she is signing a cotnract with the child according to which she will feed it for the next nine months.

HockeyDude, why does the child have to suffer death if their parents were irresponsible. I don't understand punishing someone innocent for their parents missteps.

Please, I do oppose certain procedures that are so disgusting I wont mention them, but most forms are quick and painless.  Not that a fetus up until about month 6 even has the brain and nerve development to even feel pain.

I know, but as I explained, I just feel it's necessary to have as an option.  I'd love for the world to be without it too.  Unfortunately, I think there would be some things worse move into its' place.

Right now, if I got someone pregnant, and they decided to get an abortion I would cry my eyes out for weeks.  We're not heartless, it's just, IMO, a very unfortunate outcome of society and human nature.

It isn't 'irresponsible' if you can get an abortion.

I didn't mean suffer as in feel pain, I meant it as undergo.  But good answer anyway.  Not much different between us, except I act on my conscience in one way, you in another.
