What practical use other than a drive-by shooting would one possibly have for a machine gun?

Shooting holes on beer barrels.
Why? Because it's fun.

That I can think off, Andorra, Switzerland, Finland, and the USA if they were registered before 1986. I can't say there aren't more.

No - there is no need for any private citizen to possess those

Of course there is. One, they're fun to fire, and two, they can be used to keep the government in check.

Until, such time as people can be responsible, and nutheads are a thing of the past, I would never support those kinds of weapons in civil society - it's as simple as that

I don't have a problem with rifles, shotguns, handguns, etc - but, surely,  machine guns are somewhat more dangerous if they are allowed into the wrong hands

Sure, as long as the laws regulating who can have one are stricter than usual.

Yes.

Machine guns have a purpose - legitimate defense.

I advocate that we ban things like grenades, rocket launchers, and surface-to-air missiles since their only purpose could be collateral damage.  It's not like you're going to protect your family with some plastic explosives.

That sounds like a good place for you to move to. It is also well known for low taxes and is used by many companies as a tax haven.

Depends on the type.

Hunting rifles - sure
SWAT/military rifles - nope

Why not? I understand the others, but I can think of several ways I could use a grenade to protect my family.

It is hilarious that many of the same people that want to ban strip clubs, porn, or prostitution want the sale of machine guns to be legal.

Maybe because they feel that machine guns are reasonably safe while that other stuff erodes society?

I mean, I disagee with them profusely, but it isn't hypocrisy.

No. Be rational. People should be able to own almost all types of guns, but there is no practical use for a machine gun in peacetime.

I  didn't say hypocrisy, I said hilarious - as in hilariously dumb or absurd.
