It can. But what I was really alluding to is that the college educated tend to be better off financially. That isn't to say the wealthy can't embrace left wing views, just that they have considerably less incentive.
I think part of the reason for emerging liberal backlash now really is because Conservatism has devolved into a primarily a 'faith based' movement. Say what you will about the post-War right, but along with the reactionaries they also had a formidable amount of researchers and genuine intellectuals. Now they don't even bother to look up facts, everything is built around common conceptions and predetermined conclusions. The result are 'leaders' like George W. Bush. And as dumbed down as much of the public is, even they are starting to see that the 'New Right' is pretty much bankrupt now.
