Liberal/Progressive -- ie, liberal socially and economically.

That said, I am open to compromise and am not a complete idealogue.  I could compromise on gun control, some tax breaks and some trade related measures.  I am less likely to compromise on clean air and water provisions, pollution control, war in Iraq, separation of church and state and things, etc.

Liberal/progressive, but I think the gov't must become smarter in how it helps people. A check in the mail isn't always the solution.

If you're libertarian (i.e. not socialist), how can you support the Democrats?

If you're libertarian (i.e. not socialist), how can you support the Democrats?
Well, I'm more of a libertarian leaning moderate. But here are my reasons:

1. By now, the GOP is pretty much all talk when it comes to being for 'small government' and fiscal restraint. They had all 3 branches of government, and instead of seeing any real cuts we had one of the largest expansions in government spending since the New Deal. And mostly pork barrel, corporate welfare spending too. Nothing that actually benefited most people. The Democrats at least talk about trying to balance the budget now, even if in practice it seems to translate to 'raise taxes on upper class people.'

2. Socially both parties have a hideous authoritarian streak going on, but the GOP is more blatantly pandering to religious fundamentalists and xenophobes by now. The Democrats are at least not trying to use the federal government to push their own prejudices, for the most part. I'd rather go for a party that supports the status quo than one which wants to go back to an imaginary past, minority rights or facts be damned.

3. The GOP's foreign policy has gone from 'self interested,' skeptical internationalism to openly hostile, shoot-first-ask-questions-later PNAC neo-Conservatism. It's basically a right-wing version of Wilsonianism. The Dems still have retarded 'humanitarian intervention' types and more than a few cynical hawks (like Hillary), but they're comparatively more restrained and credible overall. I probably won't trust a Republican presidential candidate on foreign policy for at least the next 8-12 years.

4. The Democrats have been seeing a consistent increase in the amount of college educated, wealthy and business-focused voters in their rank as well as in women and the other minorities that consistently vote for them. I think if trends continue the more liberal economic policies being proposed now could be dropped again in favor of 90's centrist/center-right economic policies. When you take into account that the GOP's base is now basically evangelicals and working/middle white class males, the chances of the GOP going more populist (re: big government) than now are also pretty high.

I can vote for Republicans locally, but given the direction the party is going on a national level I don't think I'll identify as one again for quite some time. At most, Independent.
