In 1972 and 1980, it was the only county in the state to vote Democratic.  It was continuing a pretty consistent trend all the way through until 2000, when suddenly it swung dramatically to the GOP and never looked back.

Probably.  If you look at the vote from the old mining towns in Cochise County, they also still vote Democratic Pary.  It's the vote of Sierra Vista which is a lot more that puts Cochise in the Republican column.

You mean Bisbee.  There aren't any other mining towns in Cochise county, right?  Douglas, Naco and Bisbee are Democratic.  But, Bisbee is an artsy town.  If you've ever been there you feel like a lot of the population is burn out hippies who can live cheaply in Bisbee and like the mining town vibe.  It's not a mining town any more.

Back in its mining days, the town of Bisbee expelled union supporters. The town of Harrison, Ark., did the same thing.
