Kansas Governor: Brownback (R) 47%, Davis (D) 40%

The survey of 750 Likely Voters in Kansas was conducted on April 16-17, 2014 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC.

The problem with a strongly Republican state like Kansas is that even if Brownie can get his abysmal approval up by just 5%, he already has a much better chance to win re-election ...

And this is what could happen right now.

The fact that Brownback is this low in Kansas, with his opponent having a presumably low name recognition is pretty amazing.

The Davis campaign has actually been pretty competent thus far. That being said, with the Koch brothers determined not to lose in their own backyard, Brownback is going to have a significant financial advantage. The national mood would have to turn sharply against Republicans, and I don't see that happening.

A caveat: incompetence, extremism, or corruption can counteract any 'natural' advantage that the partisan identity of any state. Just look at Illinois this year.
