During my trip to Denver last week I realized that I didn't recognize the baggage and pickup zone at the airport. My previous trips to Denver were before 1995 and went through Stapleton Airport. I had changed planes in DEN since 1995, but it wasn't until I saw the outside that it occurred to me that this was a different airport. That's in contrast to Chicago Midway, which has completely different terminals since I first used it, but is at the same location.

By my count, I've purposely flown to, from or through 95 airports, flown through and deplaned to stretch my legs on a direct flight on 4 more, landed at, but stayed on the plane for another 4, and visited but did not fly from 5 other airports.  So 95, 99, 103 or 108, depending on how you want to calculate it.

With such an exhaustive list, I could have missed some airports, though.

I count it if I'm on the tarmac or in the terminal, so your high number would be consistent with that. I'm sure we'd love to see your list if you have time to enter it.

No, but I took advantage of an opportunity to visit Hanscom AFB. There was a rare open house of the MIT research facility there. I only expected to see the main labs, but it turned out the open house included specially refitted aircraft on base for use in research.

How do you remember all the airports you have been to Muon2 in your rather long life? I certainly am not sure as to all of the airports I have been in. Did I ever land in Kansas City as a pit stop? Ditto for Klammath Falls, going from Bend to SF. I am not sure.

It helps that I didn't fly before I got to grad school. However, I learned to read in part from the free highway maps given away at gas stations. That seems to have given me a natural affinity for geography, including remembering things like airports and counties. I'm looking forward to a bonanza of new airports next month when I visit five islands (and all five counties) in HI.

At what age Muon2 did you start collecting records of where you have been? I mean, I traveled a lot as a kid as compared to most people, and even though I was a map junkie, and so forth, I can hardly pretend to remember each airport I was in. When I was shipped off to live with my grandparents in Davenport, Iowa at age 4 for 6 six months, since I was so high maintenance, and my mother had to contend with her new baby son, how did I get there from LA? I can guess, but I don't really know. (I might add, that I had no desire to leave, but in due course, I was shipped back against my will as it were.) Not sure how I got back either. And then I vaguely remember taking the train from LA I think to Iowa with my mother (not sure if it was Des Moines or Davenport or all the way to Chicago), on another trip.

I started collecting maps around the age of three. The gas stations gave them away for free back then, and I would look for maps of new states to add to my collection. I would draw routes on some and save others. Before I was 6 my parents got me a multivolume atlas. When I discovered used book stores, the first thing I looked for were the old National Geographic magazines so I could find ones with maps still inside, most of which I still have. We didn't vacation much when I was growing up, and when we did it was by car, so I didn't keep track of airports until I was in grad school.

Harumph! Your second-place count of 114 to my 116 is even more precarious than I had realized!

We shall have to agree to disagree on what it means to check off an airport on one's list -- because by your definition, having been to any military base with an IACO code would count, no?

I've been to military bases but not on the tarmac (and some don't have terminals in the passenger sense), and I do not count those. I've been in the parking lots of commercial airports, but that is also insufficient for me to count. I've spent time waiting for flights in an airport terminal and I do want to count those as being "an airport I've been to" in response to the question that leads this thread. On the "Where have you flown this year?" thread, I distinguish between those I flew into or out if from those I had activity in other than flying.

Here's my latest. I'm doing my best to keep pace, but I work more on counties than airports. To count as at an airport I either have to be in the terminal or on the tarmac (in or outside a plane). To make Nutmeg happy I've put an asterisk in front of those airports where I did not have a take-off or landing.
