Yes. And remember that it is still early days there, counting wise.

Hetton is a relief; not the sort of place we should ever lose and after 2012 it was looking alarmingly plausible.

The Guardian were asking me for help with their election journalism last week.  (I've been off the internet all this week.)

By the look of it they could have done with you!

But what would they have paid? Probably very little, being that particular paper of news.

Like, they just fell for an obvious bit of trolling: someone suggesting that UKIP had gained a nonexistent ward in a council that is not counting tonight.

The one good thing about UKIP councillors is that they will drop one a day after the election because Facebook reveals they are nuts.

Sunderland all in.  Lab 21 (-1) Con 3 (n/c) Ind 1 (+1)

Lab and Con swapped St Chad's and St. Peter's.  Ind gained Copt Hill from Lab.  Labour do seem to have been hit more than the Tories by UKIP here.

Not enough to make me give up the day job, probably.

They were asking me rather strange questions which are rather outside my knowledge; "how many female councillors are running this year" was probably the weirdest.

The majority was actually 89.

There are apparently rumours that Mike Hancock has lost his Portsmouth council seat to UKIP.

Helen Pidd of the Guardian says on Twitter that Jahingir Akhtar (Lab), deputy leader of Rotherham Council, has lost his Rotherham West seat to UKIP by 39 votes.

And probably also on the back of the garden waste fiasco which is hurting Labour across the 'burbs. Very narrow - again.

UKIP are polling very strongly in many suburban wards as well: but then this was expected as they did in 2009.

Rotherham all in, and yes it's pretty disastrous.  Labour have 11 and UKIP 10.

UKIP gain from Lab: Dinnington, Keppel, Rother Vale, Rotherham West, Silverwood, Valley, Wingfield

UKIP confirm by-election gain from Lab: Rawmarsh

UKIP gain from Con: Hellaby, Sitwell

Lab hold: Anston & Woodsetts, Boston Castle, Brinsworth & Catcliffe, Holderness, Hoober, Maltby, Rotherham East, Swinton, Wales, Wath, Wickersley

The results, the authority or the local Labour branches?

Results are starting to come through from Greater Manchester.  So far the Tories have gained a council seat in the Leigh constituency (Lowton West).

Rotherham wasn't far from being even worse for Labour: most of the wards they won were close and in particular they only held Holderness by three votes.
