I have a mutual FB friend with Nate Phelps, who left the Westboro Baptist Church and she quoted a post of his saying that Fred Phelps is currently dying in a hospice. If there's article or blog post I can find, I'll be linking to it.

I'm not defending Fred Phelps obviously. I'm just pointing out that his death is ultimately minor (and I don't celebrate anyone's death, but that's for another post).

You gotta wonder how much of the Phelps family's efforts to be shockingly hateful and offensive Real-Life Trolls are really just ways to attract controversy (after all, there is no such thing as bad publicity, etc.) and make a lot of money off of the inevitable lawsuits.

They are smart enough to know their First Amendment rights; they are mostly a family of lawyers, IIRC. And they may be selling horrific hate speech, but the important thing is that it sells. Even though the vast majority of Americans of all political and religious backgrounds despise the Phelps family, just the fact that they get the attention that they so crave is enough to keep them going, IMHO.

I agree with your prediction but I hope it doesn't come true. This is a time to be the better person. No sense getting dragged into the gutter.

Perhaps you're right.

Not really a fan of feces to be honest.  But it would at least have some poetic justice to it if gay rights activists protested his funeral.  I wouldn't encourage mockery or rage hating, but at least reminding people who are celebrating the man's life what he stood for.  Hell, given what I'm about to say, maybe they should even OCCUPY WBC.

The Phelps group have harassed countless people and are inclined towards a parasitic urge to get people into situations where the Phelps take all of their money through shady legal maneuvering.  He and his family contribute absolutely nothing to American society except to rob decent Americans of their life savings by egging them into lawsuits that they know they can't win.  I respect First Amendment rights, what I don't respect is parasites like the Phelps family who abuse our laws and rulings for monetary gain.

It's insane to think that at one time this was the same Phelps family that helped fight Jim Crow in Kansas.  If there is any mourning to be done, it should be in memory of the Fred Phelps that died shortly after that time, not the one who is on the deathbed now.

They say he's been excommunicated but won't say why?  Well it would certainly help his standing if he made it public, especially if it was a change of heart.  But so far I haven't heard anything, besides that his hateful church told him to get out, that should arouse much sympathy.  And even then I can't guess or imagine if it was because he wasn't hateful enough or if he was too hateful.

I mean I used to subscribe to the notion that all death was bad and you should be humble when people died, but for situations like this I can't say I feel a remote interest in being so.

All caveats about judging aside, I hope Phelps has the opportunity to tell at least one person he's sorry for making their life unpleasant.  Not everybody has that luxury.  That's probably all a fantasy, of course, but you never know what goes on behind closed doors.

I'm not going to say Phelps was a nice man, of course.  I think that ship has sailed.
