Social Issues

Abortion: Should be left to the states, but at the state level I'm pro-choice except for late term abortions.

Gay Marriage: Ass long as heterosexual couples receive federal benefits, so should homosexual ones.
Affirmative Action: Strongly oppose.
Gun rights: Against.

Smoking bans: Oppose, it should be up to each person whether or not smoking is allowed on their private property.

Gambling: Should be left to the states, & at the state level I'm completely neutral.
Prostitution: Should be left to the states, & at the state level I'm completely neutral.
Embryonic Stem Cell Research: Oppose federal funding for it, but I would also oppose banning it.
Economic Issues

Taxes: I think the best thing would be a mixture of a flat income tax & a national sales tax, because having just one one would make it too high.
Employers and Employees: I basically take all of the "pro business" stances.
Free trade: Strongly support.
Spending: Limited & spent mostly on military.
Social Security: Support privatization
Welfare: Ideally, it would be eliminated, but I support reforming it as a first step there.
Healthcare: Oppose socialized medicine and a public option
Education: I think vouchers for private schools  would be a better alternative to public schools, strongly support homeschooling, & strongly oppose making education mandatory.
Minimum Wage: Support abolishing it.
Regulation: Very little.

Foreign Issues

United Nations: Oppose.
Afghanistan: Support, but I'm undecided on if we're still needed there.
Iraq: Undecided.
Israeli–Palestinian conflict: Support a two state solution.
Iran: Favor military strikes if diplomacy fails
North Korea: Favor multilateral approach
Patriot Act: Oppose
Torture: Undecided, but leaning towards oppose.
Military Involvement: Varies by circumstance

I might think of more issues later.

Very socially conservative. A few examples;
Abortion: Only when the life of the mother is seriously threatened.
Gay "Marriage": Completely and totally illegal.
Drugs: Marijuana should be completely illegal, and I'm not too fond of alcohol or cigarettes but I realize those two would be nearly impossible to illegalize, so I'll tolerate them in moderation.
Church and State: Keep "In God we Trust", school prayers should be allowed but determined based on the school districts, freedom OF religion not FROM religion, take out the "Solemnly swear" parts of oaths and return to what it was, etc.

Moderately economically conservative. A few examples;
Taxes: Should be a universal tax rate from the bottom of the ladder to the very top, with the exception being the absolute poorest of the poor, whom should receive government assistance, but must prove they are actively trying to secure a job that can pay for themselves.
Deficit Spending: Slash spending across the board, with the only exceptions being education and the military.
Welfare: Only for the poorest of the poor, and drug test applicants.
Debt Ceiling: Lower, lower, LOWER!!!!

May I be the first to say that you make me, as a gay man, an atheist, a man who thinks government shouldn't control what you put in your body, a man who believes that those who can afford it should give back to the community, who believes that science should lead the way on issues of women's health and that women shouldn't be made to carry their rapist's baby, that our military is bloated and needs to be cut, and that everyone deserves a basic standard of living, sick? I think you might find a certain other Vladimir to be a good friend of yours.

Actually, I'm a big Putin fan. So is 70% of Russians and most Crimeans. Smiley

Good to know, I'll need a good punching bag about which to get needlessly angry and rant on the internet. Now, starting with the easy questions, why should gay marriage be illegal?

Good question! But, before I start, you don't have to get angry with me. I'm a nice guy once you get past your initial disgust and contempt with me Wink.
Anyhow, I could simply answer that question based on my belief in God, but that's probably not what you are looking for, and I'd get a stock response for it so I'll stay away from that. Why gay "marriage" should be illegal; the definition of marriage is (or should be based on whatever view you have on the definition) a union between a man in a woman, based on love, for the purpose of creating a stable family environment for a child/children.
Your next assertion would undoubtedly be one of the following; either, "If two gays love eachother, why can't they be happy too?" or, "Gays can create a stable family environment and raise children as well, so why can't they do so?". Well, before I continue, let me say that I have several gay family members/friends and I do not hate anybody for simply being gay. Now, with that said, I contend that homosexuality is not natural, and is a self-induced mental condition, meaning, a state of mind one puts themselves in. (I'll probably get questioned for this statement but I assure you I can back it up, but I'll save that for later). Also, for two gays to "create" a family, they have to either adopt a child, or artificially produce one through the help of modern science. Sure, on the outside it appears to be relatively similar to a "straight" marriage. But, the sad truth is, is that the vast majority of said gay "marriages" do not provide a stable family environment. Gays have a much higher; divorce rate, partner violence rate, disease (whether it be an STD or a genetic disease) rate, as well as a much lower percentage reporting marital fidelity.

I could go on, but I have a feeling this is already a bit much. So, I'll continue whenever prompted to. Also, I can provide sources for these "accusations", which I will probably be asked to list. Also, let me assure you once more; I do not hate anybody for merely being gay. I have many gay friends/ a few gay family members. I do not hate anybody here that opposes my views/facts. Also, if you or anybody else disagrees, please avoid vitriol and stick to logical, factual responses; I'm not here for a pissing contest. (Just figured I should state all the above less I be called a 'homophobic bigoted hater' or something of the like).

Okay, I'll bite. What is your source for these, shall we say... strong claims?

End the war on drugs, pass ENDA, equal rights for LGBT, ban states from passing right to work, and end the War on Women.

I was unaware of this war. We clearly shouldn't be wasting our military's budget on such a costly and pointless endeavor.

I know there's no way it's realistically happening but I'm a Mormon and I don't drink caffeine.

I live in a suburb and don't own a gun. Therefore gun ownership should be legal but strongly regulated.

I get the joke, but isn't that your actual view on gun control? Tongue

I'd just like to point out that "it should be left to the states" or whatever is not an actual position. It's like saying "foreign policy should be left to the federal government". Yes, and?

I remember when I first joined this forum that was my answer to just about every social issue. Not so much anymore.

Party: Republican
Ideology: Conservative

I'll go issue by issue. No need for long explanations.  Basically, a conservative Republican who has a few liberal views (global warming for one), but is uniformly otherwise conservative, pro-civil liberties, and is an internationalist that believes in America projecting her power.
...

That's interesting, considering I expected someone named after Calvin Coolidge to be something along the lines of a isolationist or non-interventionist. Considering my own political views, I'll call that a pleasant surprise. Wink

Rather than list every specific issue, I will try to describe my views in general terms of how I tihnk:

Economics: Pro-trade, pro-competition, anti-monopoly. This generally leads me to right wing economic conclusions, such as thinking taxes should be as low as feasibly possible, though not always. For example, I am strongly opposed to "corporate welfare" (such as farm subsidies), because allowing businesses to fail is one of the essential parts to making free market competition work, but I do think the government should provide a social safety net and that the public sector should be involved in the few areas where competition doesn't work,  such as police and (more controversially) healthcare.

Social issues: Basically the standard libertarian spiel about how people should be allowed to do things that don't violate the rights of others, with the caveat that I have no qualms about punishing people who do violate the rights of others to the fullest extent of the law. I'm also generally supportive of the policies and the military, seeing these institutions as being necessary to protect and enforce people's rights and liberties, both domestically and abroad. This combination of views is what leads to the weird quark of me generally being libertarian on social issues, while also being "hawkish" and supportive of things like the death penalty.

Foreign policy: To but quite simply, globalization. I think that free trade, liberal immigration laws, and global cooperation are all net positives that we should strive for whenever possible. While I am not necessarily an "abolish all borders" extremist, since that frankly seems unworkable to me, I do think we should try to become more globally integrated, not less, and that while it's obviously not possible to solve all the world's problems, we can't just turn a blind eye to  suffering and tyranny in other countries either. I am strongly against pulling out of organizations like NATO and UN and think that, despite their flaws, we are better off with them than without them, and I am frankly very concerned about the nationalism and anti-globalization trends that are happening to recently, to the point that I am almost becoming a single issue voter.

Overall: I don't know what to call this fricking mess of an ideology or philosophy or whatever, do you? Tongue

I will also steal Lechasseur's model because why not.

Overview:
Social: Libertarianish
Economic: Center-Right by my own definition, but possibly Center or even Center-Left by American Conservative/Libertarian standards
Foreign policy: Dirty Globalist

Social Policy:
Abortion: Pro-choice until the point of viability, should only be legal if medically necessary after that point.
Same-Sex Marriage: Fully support, not that it's even controversial anymore.
Drug Laws: Legalize marijuana, LSD, and other psychedelics, decriminalize the rest, also nationwide medical marijuana
Death Penalty: Support for serial killers and other similarly high level crimes.
Gun Control: Support universal background checks and banning bump stocks, oppose banning "Assault Weapons" and most other forms of gun control.
Religious Freedom: Too broad of a subject to give a definitive answer on
Affirmative Action: Oppose
Political Correctness: Most people are too easily offended, especially on the right.
Euthanasia: Should be legal in cases of terminal illnesses, not sure about otherwise.
Prostitution: Legalize it.
Pornography: Support unrestricted so long as it depicts consenting adults
Immigration: While completely open borders and unregulated immigration is probably unfeasible, we should always err on the side of being accepting and open to immigration. Oppose separating families, support a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants, a border wall is an unnecessary waste of money.

Economic Policy:
Minimum Wage: Ideally, the federal minimum wage should be abolished, due to widely differing costs of living for different areas. Realistically, it should be kept fairly low, though I would support tying it to inflation.
Right to Work: Pretty apathetic tbh.
Taxation: Should be as low and simplified as realistically possible, income and carbon taxes are preferable to sales taxes.
Healthcare: At least a basic level of healthcare should be considered a right guaranteed by the government, though I am not opposed to the existence of private specialty plans.
Education: Support compition and school choice via measures like vouchers and charter schools.
Free Trade: I support expanding free trade to as many nations as possible, and free trade agreements like NAFTA are a net positive for all nations involved.

Foreign Policy and National Security:
Iran: Keep the Iran deal.
Syria: Ideally Assad should be removed from power, but I do not trust the current administration's judgement enough to fully back an intervention there.
Israel/Palestine: Two-state solution is ideal, but we need to go about in a way that doesn't jeopardize our alliance with Israel.
Russia: Putin is not and should not be thought of as our ally.

Environment:
Climate Change: End all government subsidies and support for traditional energy and instead invest in alternative energy, including nuclear energy.

Electoral and Political Reform:
Term limits: Not really necessary IMO.
Electoral College Reform: Ideally it should be eliminated, though I also like the idea of allocating them proportionally (e.g. if a candidate wins 40% of the vote in a state they get 40% of that state's EVs).
Voter ID: Oppose and support a vote-by-mail system.

Wow, I agree with you on like 90% of this.

Interesting, I assumed my weird combination of views would be quite undesirable to most people. I guess I'm not the only crazy one.
