Another knife in the corpse of "the Moderate New England was lost by the GOP when it went rightward" theory. Atleast 50% of the reason is because of demographic changes to area.

Old New England was a far different place. Back before the environmental moved was strong and congregationalism still had a hefty amount of traditionalism to it, New England, particularly the northern part was far different. Throw in the traditionalist catholics into the mix and you have a fairly right wing mix there. Maine did elect Ralph O. Brewster to the Senate afterall.
