Essentially, here is the country broken up into four main regions. (not going into sub regions)

In 1940, every single Midwestern state trended R.
North Dakota trended the most R, Illinois the least R.

Now in 1940, only one Southern state trended Republican, Oklahoma.
Of the other Southern states, North Carolina trended the most D, Texas the least D.

Also in 1940, only one Western State trended Democratic, New Mexico.
Of the other Western states, Oregon trended the most R, Utah the least R.

In !944, every Southern State trended R.
Arkansas trended R the most, Oklahoma the least.

Also in 1944, every western state trended R.
Nevada trended R the most, California the least.

In the 1972 election, only one Midwestern state trended R, Missouri.

Going into subregions now, the upper Northeast (Maine, New Hamphsire, and Vermont) all trended D in the elections of 1940, 1960, 1964, 1988, 1992, 1996, and 2004.
They have trended all R in the elections of 1948, 1952, 1968, 1976, and 2000 elections.
