Two reports on Monday said that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani may enter the Empire State's governor's race after all, despite the conventional wisdom that he has his sights firmly set on the White House.

"If you talk . . . to Rudy's people, you will get the very distinct impression they are seriously looking at it," former congressman and one-time Staten Island borough president Guy Molinari told the Associated Press.

"There is no question in my mind" that the governor's race remains an option for Rudy, Molinari said, if New York Gov. George Pataki decides not to run for a fourth term.

I'd love to see Giulani lose a race. It'll take him down a notch.

Pataki hasn't said yet if he will run again (to get shelled or not).  So before anything happens with Rudy, Pataki will need to make a deciision.
Rudy might be leaning more towards going for Govenor now as it is looking like he will have a real hard time of knocking off Clinton if he ran for Senate.  Hard to say who would win in a race between Rudy & Spitzer.  Both are real popular figures, Rudy especially after 9/11, but his hard-core Bush cheerleading may turn off some voters in one of the bluest states

If Rudy wants the job, Pataki will bow out.

It's not like Pataki's chances were looking very good anyway.

Both Rudy & Pataki are both very arogant.  They were known to butt heads quite a few times back when Rudy was mayor.  So even if Rudy makes it known he wants to run Pataki isn't going to bow out just because (he may not run, but it won't be for the reason that Rudy wants to run) Pataki is done regardless, he will get killed against Spitzer & he will be killed if he decides to run against Clinton
