Mixed, lean FF.

He was literally the only human being alive who had the capacity to break the ill-gotten, ill-used perpetual power of the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority and its Dark Lord, Robert Moses.

And break the power of Triborough he did.

I can't claim to say that I like the totality of his political career, and in particular I will of course join 99 percent of the forum here in denouncing his misguided drug laws as utter dogs**t.  But, for that one gloriously necessary act of returning public works in New York back to the people, his legacy is secure- everything else is a mere footnote in comparison.

Oh, I don't deny that he did several good things as Governor. The issue is his spearheading the War on Drugs along with being generally annoyed at Atlas's adoration of liberal Republicans (often the same people who despise "Blue Dog" Democrats).

Is it possible to hate both those specimens of politician? Blue Dogs and Liberal Republicans are both The Worst.

That's the ideal position, yes. The issue is that Blue Dogs are rarely popular here while liberal Republicans inexplicably are.

His work in expanding the SUNY system and meeting the need for increased infrastructure in the NYC metro area are among the things that make him deserving of a spot on any list of the greatest post-war state governors. His drug policy is the one black mark on his record, and to be fair, there was no serious policy alternative to heavy-handed, zero-tolerance criminalization being floated by either party at the time.

So you admit he "did several good things as Governor", but think he's a horrible person because some random people on a forum 35 years after his death "adore liberal Republicans". Makes total sense.

I don't see how the first thing is even a factor at all, but whatever floats your boat. Would he suddenly be a FF if you were posting on Free Republic instead because they hate liberal Republicans?

Also, I don't see how it's weird that LIBERAL Republicans are looked upon more favorably than CONSERVATIVE Democrats.

Lean HP, because supporting an end to the old Jim Crow is cancelled out by starting the new one.

The worst. Adopted all the wrong parts of social policy from both sides. Should've reversed it instead, ie. pro-drugs and pro-life. As well, attempted to safeguard the thankfully dying system of authoritarian Republican "liberalism" that wanted to run the party. Just awful. Too bad its successor hasn't been too kind a steward these days either.

Is responsible for the disease that is slowly torturing and killing modern day politics.  Outside of supporting Civil Rights, which even a lot of conservative Republicans supported back then, I can't think of anything the man did that deserves the amount of praise he sometimes gets.

Also, Drug Wars.  SO yeah, easy HP vote here.

One of the most massive and epic FFs this country has ever seen.  A great Republican and a great American.

And I say this despite his misguided abortion policies.
