The Kentucky senator, who leads the Republicans in the Senate, is ahead of his opponent in the May 20 GOP primary as they reach the final stretch of their campaign, according to a Jan. 2 Human Events/Gravis poll of 683 registered Republicans.

Sen. A. Mitchell “Mitch” McConnell was the choice of 53 percent of respondents compared to 31 percent for Louisville businessman Matthew G. Bevin, said Doug Kaplan, the president of Gravis Marketing, a Florida-based polling company that conducted the poll. The poll carried a margin of error of 4 percent.

When McConnell was pitted against University of Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari, the senator beats the coach 59 percent to 26 percent, he said.

Generally, it seems like McConnell is more electable than Bevin. So that's good. Although, I would much, much rather have Bevin than McConnell in the Senate, Bevin is too flawed and too unpredictable to hold a secure election against Grimes.

Still very early. More than 4 months of campaigning to go still. Anything could happen really. McConnell is still one of the most vulnerable this midterm season in my view, both in primary and especially in general election.
