Of the readings in the Revised Common Lectionary for 7 January 2014, I chose to reflect on Ephesians 3:14-21.

Being rooted and established in love Ephesians 3:17b

Whoever may be the author of this text* this passage conveys quite eloquently one of the central themes of Christianity, ἀγάπη, love. I have nothing more to say about the text, so the footnote gets to be longer than the reflection this time.

* Modern scholarship is divided as to whether this is a genuine Pauline epistle. It also is divided over whether it was originally sent to the Ephesians, with some thinking it may be the lost Epistle to the Laodiceans since the earliest known texts omit reference to Ephesus and it is thought that its contents are more relevant to Laodicea than Ephesus.

A previous thread of yours reminded me of a line from a C.S. Lewis book (A Grief Observed). This one brings to mind a line from a different apologist, G.K. Chesterton:

It is all well and good to say that men should love Pimlico, but who will love Eltham?

Hopefully some people who live in Eltham Tongue

But yeah, this was actually the first lesson I taught small group over with the campus ministry group I am with. Considering how loosely the term love is used in English, we roll with the definition "Choosing unselfishly for the highest good of another".
