The sponsor has 24 hours to begin advocating for this.

The definition of "rational" sure has changed. Tongue

Don't homeschooled students have just as good, if not better, test scores?

I support the motion to table this - we need less government intervention.

I hate homeschooling. Most of the kids are not as charismatic as I am and tend to have poor social skills.

That said, we should give them a choice to be all of those things.

I think it goes on a case-by-case basis - there are kids deemed to be anti-social in public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. Back in Indiana, I was friends with several folks who were home-schooled, and while a couple were a bit socially awkward, we also had others who were extroverted, one going on to be the county fair queen and a runner-up at the state fair pageant.

This bill will prevent the form of child abuse euphemistically known as "homeschooling." I oppose all efforts to table this bill and ask the Senate consider protecting the rights of our children not to be educated by religious lunatics or other unqualified creeps.

As a former homeschooler myself, I have come to despise homeschooling. I must say however, that families should have the opportunity to make that decision for themselves. However, I would not oppose legislation that prohibits the use of religious curricula that promote scientific fallacies, as being acceptable by the state.

I don't even know how homeschooling works, but I don't think my or TNF's narrow and negative opinions on the practice would be enough to outright ban it nationwide. Some homeschoolers have gone on to be successful and nothing suggests its terribly harmful.

I sure as hell would never homeschool my kid, mainly because that means they will be around all the time, and no parent wants their kids in the house 24/7. My god, that would be a awful.

A motion to table the "Rational Education Act of 2013" has been filed by Senator Maxwell and seconded by Senator Spiral. A vote is thus open on the question of whether or not to table said legislation and remove it from the floor.

Senators, please vote Aye, Nay or Abstain. This will will last forty eight hours and require 2/3rds of those voting to vote in favor to be passed.

I was an unsuccessfully home schooled student for two years before being placed in a public school by my parents. I must say that I found presence in a public school to be little more effective at socializing myself then remaining at home. I spurned any kind of involvement just to maximize my time away from the place and increase the time I was home. At the same time, I found that was more effective at teaching myself history than any school and from middle school one, I found myself having to cringe as teacher's botched historical events. I found myself constantly harrassed and tormented by administrators who needed to dictate how I dressed and what I ate when, in order to feel good about themselves. Little wonder I just wanted to be away from that place.

From my own experience, I know that homeschooling can thus succeed as much as it can fail. But, I also know that public school can succeed as much as it can fail. The public school has just as much power to isolate and to scar mentally and emotionally a child as an overproductive or even abusive parent can. Both methods can fail, but at least can can provide an alternative to other and I would rather that second chance at learning be available then to condemn them to a lifetime of ignorance just so some statist can feel better about themselves by exerting control over the destructive element themselves.

I, like Matt and Duke and TNF really dislike homeschooling. Having said that I also think that the bill as written would be far worse than the status quo, because it's just too absolutist and doesn't allow exceptions for people with special needs who are better served by homeschooling.

Nay, with the expectation that the bill will be amended.

Nay,

but I wouldn't vote for it in its current form. I think there's some value in discussing what the possible positives of home schooling might be. I consider myself a swing vote. I don't really have an opinion on home schooling. What I do like is objective data Tongue, so I'll do some research.

Roll Eyes

Let's just separate children from their parents at birth and raise them in government homes.

Killed a bill like this in the Northeast legislature. Don't ban homeschooling, parents should have the option to educate their children - regardless of our own personal preferences.

Don't worry, I don't plan to ban homeschooling despite my personal feelings on the matter. I'm all about freedom. Freedom to love. Freedom to ruin your children's social skills, etc.

Of course, the senate can override my mighty veto pen, but then I am washed of the blame.

You set standards, you regulate and practice careful oversight. If a bad situation is happening you can act accordingly.
