CNN Poll: Pope's approval rating sky-high

By Daniel Burke, CNN Belief Blog Co-Editor
December 24th, 2013

(CNN) – As Pope Francis prepares to celebrate his first Christmas at the Vatican, Americans' opinions of the pontiff appear to be as high as the dome on St. Peter's Basilica, according to a new survey.

A CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday found that 88% of American Catholics approve of how Francis is handling his role as head of the 1.2 billion-member church.

The popular pontiff has also made a positive impression among Americans in general: Nearly three in four view Francis favorably.  The new survey suggests that the Pope is arguably the most well-regarded religious figure among the American public today, said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

Generally, conservative Catholics are going to be obedient to the pope, no matter what, while liberal Catholics will only like popes they perceive as liberal.

Thus, these results aren't very surprising.  I bet most of the disapprovals are converts.

He could be the next JPII, a beloved figure that transcends religion.

He should get involved in politics too, the rest of the world needs a guy like him.

Correct. We love him even though people are trying to promote this idea that Catholic conservatives in the U.S. dislike him. Pope Francis hasn't changed Church doctrine and those of us with a brain realize this.

What of non-Catholics? I mean everyone: Protestants, Orthodox Christians, Jews, Muslims, etc.

I'd suspect moderately favorable from other Christian denominations and Jews, but Muslims are a toss-up in my mind(seeing as he is the Pope, but noted as a friend of Islam in Argentina).

Has there ever been a pope that has been viewed more favorably by non-Catholics than Catholics?

Wait, what?  Everyone knows that conservative Catholics will never think ill of the pope, no matter what he says or does.

Not true. There are schismatic movements on the both the right and left. If Pope Francis were to crack down on the Tridentine Mass for example, you can bet some goofball righties would leave the Church over it.

Ignore me if your comment was sarcastic Wink

I mean, yes, there are occasional oddballs in everything.  But by and large, conservative traditional Catholics are going to get behind the Pope.

Even on this board, people like TJ are spinning everything Francis says into "I've believed all that all along!!"

I don't think Small L was referring to Catholics who support the GOP on issues like abortion and gay marriage like myself, he was referring to the SSPX types or sedevancatists who have no problem ignoring the pope or declaring he isn't really the pope.

Now as far as spinning and Pope Francis, the reason it seems to you like I'm spinning everything Francis says is because it's all being spun to say things he didn't actually say before either of us respond to it. He is the first pope we've had in decades who doesn't see himself as a theologian but as a shepherd. On the rare occasions he does discuss theology and doctrine, he often quotes Pope Benedict for paragraphs at a time. Francis has spoken out if favor of a hermeneutic of continuity multiple times and condemned a hermeneutic of rupture. Now, maybe he's lying through his teeth, but I'll take him at his word that he's not about to suddenly change a bunch of the Church's teachings.

Is there any info on approval ratings of former Popes? Pope Francis has impressed me so much and I am not saying that he is not extremely popular, but there is a good chance that Pope approval ratings will always be very high among American Catholics because even if there are some things that the Pope is doing, they will not feel comfortable saying that they are in a state of disapproval of the leader of their Church and a man who is said to be closer to God than anyone else on earth.
