I hadn't known this.  Sad about his illness.  His consideration of assisted suicide is striking, but not that surprising, given that he co-wrote a book with Walter Jens on this issue in the late '90's.  Though I never took classes from him during the time I was at Tübingen, one of the profs I had in grad school did work that very closely dovetailed with his.
