http://ncronline.org/news/prosecutor-warns-mafia-threat-against-pope-francis

I actually heard him (a wonderful person BTW, one of the true heroes who are risking their lives to fight against the cancer of organized crime) speak about this live in a TV show. He seemed really concerned, and he wouldn't make such an assertion lightly.

It's a bit old news, but the most recent thread reminded me about that. It's a pretty chilling thought. Vatican really needs to tighten up security as much as possible, because this man is one of the greatest treasures of modern world.

What benefit is there for the mob to off the Pope? It seems like a great way to get the population to stop cooperating.

My mom and I have talked about something like this happening before.  This Pope never seemed particularly concerned about his safety.  If some nutjob wanted to put a public figure's life in serious danger, Francis would be an easy target.  I pray to God nothing happens.

The benefit would be preventing him from cleaning up the mess that is the Vatican Bank. From the many serious inquiries that have been made about this topic, an insane amount of dirty money seems to have gone through it. And of course, most of dirty money is tied in some way or another to mafia. This could hurt a lot of powerful people.

If there was ever a pope who seems to be completely unconcerned about his own personal safety, Francis could be the one. I've heard his security detail is going mad from his personal style. Perhaps greater care should be taken until this blows over.

Exact same is a subplot in The Godfather III surrounding the same bank and JP I. Ehhh. . . This pope likes press coverage, we know that.
