Core Catholic teaching has not changed. The new Pope just has a warmer, more conciliatory tone than the previous Pope. I think that the media is painting this false narrative of Francis as a *major break with Church tradition. His emphasis and tone are what are different, not the substance of what the Church teaches.

I agree that the change is largely one of emphasis, tone, and style rather than core teachings.

However: emphasis, tone, and style are important and a change for the better on those fronts is not to be sneezed at.

I'd say 80-90%.  I read an article today that he'll be surveying lay Catholics on 'social issues' in preparation for a synod next year.

How much of this buzz from a media that is tone deaf on all things religious?

Most of it of course. He's taking the common theme of Christianity to hate the sin and love the sinner and emphasizing the latter half whereas his predecessors have emphasized the former half. Yet we need both for it to make any sense at all.

It's mostly style, but he's still a vast improvement upon Ratzinger.
