Seems like there is some bipartisan support on this, and Cuomo has been a strong supporter as well.

I'll be voting no. It seems like a bad plan, even ignoring the problems of casinos. Plus the ballot language is insultingly political.

I hope this passes. The wording on the ballot is somewhat skewed, however.

I wont be voting on it, since i live across the border, but I'd have to do a bit more research before I decide.

It seems like so often these types of plans promise to raise a lot of money for schools, etc...but in reality, that money never flows to where it should.

Also of note, I keep seeing commercials about this, and I dont live in NY...seen 5 of them today already. Although I do live in the NYC TV region.

Diminishing returns. The more states that legalize casino gambling, the less profitable it will be and the more those profits will come at the expense of your own citizens.

... Decide to move?  If you don't live there, what are you deciding to vote on?

I would vote yes. Casinos are fun. Everyone loves the one near here.

Only if they were state run casinos that spent the profits on helping the poor.

I'm still undecided on this. I'll have to make up my mind in the next few hours. I'm kind of inclined to vote "yes", especially since a lot of the "no" voters seem to be religious crazies but the fact that this is supported by the thug Cuomo also makes me leery.

This, although I'm more motivated by the fact that casinos are both socially and economically corrosive.

This. Casinos are like the world's most regressive tax Tongue

Meh, I ended up voting "no". I don't feel like I was given enough answers about what the environmental impact would be. Plus, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to trip up Gov. Cuomo (R-NY).

It'll probably pass though.

I'm fine with this, mainly because I think gaming should be legalized in general and see no point in the government banning it outright.

But I think it's a bad idea to treat it as an economic development tool or a revenue generator, as so many economically depressed states like Mississippi and Michigan do.

I voted no. Casinos bring crummy jobs and misfortune.

Looks like this will pass fairly easily.

NYC seems to be supporting it as well

This is one of those issues where I just don't understand one of the sides.  I don't understand the "no" voters that vote that way because of "gambling is wrong" when there is already gambling in the area.  Atlantic City, all the indian casinos, the lottery, others I'm sure I'm forgetting.  I can understand voting no because you think the casinos might make a mess of the environment or because the wording of the bill is stupid, but voting no to keep gambling out of NY state is like voting to close the barn door when all the cows have already left.  And also this
I'm fine with this, mainly because I think gaming should be legalized in general and see no point in the government banning it outright.

No, you could actually not be lazy and try to bring some real development opportunities instead of one fraught with social problems.

Passed. Anyone got a map?

Really I think dead0man made the best point here, there's already plenty of places to gamble in or near New York, so doing this thinking you're going to prevent more widespread gambling is just silly. It's kind of the same point made by people who support a casino in downtown Minneapolis (including Mark Dayton), there's already hordes of Reservation casinos in Minnesota including the ones in Scott County not even a 30 minute drive from the core of the metro.

In a state like New York I wouldn't worry about the casino unions having a say.

I think there are some Indian casinos out there that probably didn't want the competition.  Maybe  they ran a vote no campaign to protect their racket.

That certainly doesn't explain Sullivan county.

Poor Manhattan, a tiny red island all by itself.

There does seem to be a correlation between voting for this and higher unemployment.

Sullivan County is very likely to get a new casino as part of the plan.  It will be the closest full-service casino to New York City for a seven-year exclusive period before casinos can be built in the NYC metro.  It had a lot to gain from the referendum passing.

One reason the Buffalo and Rochester areas likely voted against the referendum is that they're not going to get casinos under the proposal.  They already have Indian casinos, which were protected.  The areas expected to get one of the three casinos in the first round include the Southern Tier (Binghamton, Elmira), the Capital Region (Albany) and the Catskills (Sullivan or Ulster County).
