German Chancellor Angela Merkel phoned United States President Barack Obama on Wednesday to discuss suspicions that she may have been targeted by US intelligence agencies for years, SPIEGEL has learned.

The chancellor asked for a thorough explanation of serious indications that US intelligence agencies had declared her private mobile phone to be a target in their operations.

Wink

As if the US is not listening to her calls ... What did she think ? VIP "friendly" Chancellors are not targeted by the NSA, just because Obama is lubricating honey around her mouth ?

And what bogus excuse is it this time?

Can't be terrorism. They've practically worn that one out already.

We've come to a point where the NSA is probably just doing these things because it can to do it.

It's the job of an intelligence agency to gather information. So it gathers any information it can. The NSA is probably wiretapping Obama's phones too. Tongue Because it can do it.

Well, that is justified; monitoring domestic Muslim terrorism.

Anyways, why is this news here only because Germany is just as affected as all other allies of America? It's not as if the same wasn't public record regarding the heads of government of several other American allies already.

The German government's reaction is perhaps noteworthy though because it is among the most hypocritical in the world.

NSA wiretaps German citizens: "Move along folks, nothing of consequence has happened here...don't worry."

NSA wiretaps Merkel: "This is an outrage!!"

I think he was talking about the old GDR, which defined mass surveillance.

As for the phone, does she really have the Bundesadler on the back of it? Seems a bit, I don't know... conspicious.

And I doubt they're not tapping the United States' phone (or would if they could).

The point of spying agencies is to gather information on foreign governments. This isn't controversial.

I was talking about the fact that Merkel wasn't bothered by US suveillance programs until she was personally affected by them.

Controversial enough for the European Parliament to vote to suspend the SWIFT agreement and for the SPD to demand a suspension of TTIP negoatitions with the U.S.

But, hey, there's always some collateral damage to be expected...

Well, obviously. Things like the SWIFT agreement or military bases abroad in peacetime do not belong in a world in which

LOL.  I heard about this on the radio this morning.  I especially like the feigned outrage.

They're spies.  This is what they do.  You'd think that they might be a little better at covering their tracks, though.

As a bonus, it is apparently easier to figure out how to tap the Bundeskanzler's phone than to write a program that allows US citizens to purchase medical insurance over the internet.  Who knew?

On the other hand it took them two years and an old fashioned seat-of-the-pants gimmick to find Jofi Joseph.

No. It's just that the US has been spending a lot more on it and hasn't outsourced the task peacemeal.

As far as we know, the NSA maintains a couple of installations on German territory, for instance the so-called Dagger Complex in Darmstadt. Currently, they're also in the process of building a new complex (the Consolidated Intelligence Center) in Wiesbaden. Just close them down and expel the people who work there. Can't be that hard to do. They're foreigners, revoke their residence permit for christ's sake.

sign... you know you really don't do yourself a favour by behaving pissed over foreigners being insulted over you breaking international agreements and their laws, no matter how much it's the job of you espionage agencies.

The first rule of spying is not getting caught, the second one is to apoligise when getting caught and the last one is to not being douchebag about it.

Make some of them disappear, maybe they will get the message then.

Yeah, the only people in Europe the NSA should be gathering information on are Islamists, Neo-Nazis, dissident Irish Republicans, and related ilk. Although I guess the way they'd hypothetically do such a thing is to gather data on everyone and compare it to established "profiles" of the aforementioned people?

That'd be really mean. Citizens of Canada, the US, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and the ROC should have the right to live and work anywhere in the EEA+Switzerland, and vice versa.
