Today, American Express called me to tell me I was under financial review and requested to see my income tax returns from the last 2 years. The rep explained that they wanted to make sure I could "support my spending." I explained to them that I was a law student and made very little income, but I received income from a trust fund and my parents and have for the last 3 years. She told me they only would consider my earned income and said in worst cases, they would SHUT DOWN the account.

I've had this card since I was in high school. I've never heard of a credit card company asking for stuff like this. I have never missed a payment nor did I run a balance on the card. I am going to send them my tax info along with my bank account and trust statements, but this is just bizarre. If they only look at my income tax returns where I made like $8K last year, they'll definitely close my account. Part of me wants to just tell them thanks but no thanks and take my business elsewhere.

This sounds like a scam.  Call AMEX to verify.

It was them. I called their main office because my card was suspended from charging, and they transferred me to their review department. The woman said she didn't care about my trust or the fact that my parents were paying my bills while I was in law school; she said she needed to see my personal income...

I am going to send them my return release and I was honest about my current situation in that I worked for a wage last summer but worked pro bono the summer before. If they want to close my card, so be it. I've heard Chase has some good benefits with their cards. I've just never heard of a card company doing something like that to someone who hasn't missed any payments.

When you're a rich mob lawyer I'd tell AMEX to go f[inks] themselves before ever getting one again.

That was my parents reaction exactly... My mom said she'd "deal with them" when she had time.

But from all I've read, I can't avoid this unless I close my card. So I either do it myself or they close it worst case. The woman told me they typically do this to see if they extended too much credit...I claimed I made something like $20K income factoring in my trust withdrawals per semester on the form and my CL is only $3K a month, so I have no clue why they are coming after me.

They can see my returns for all I care. I told them they'd find very little on them. I should send them a copy of my trust fund too with a picture of my middle finger.

I ended up submitting the form and a printout of my trust so AMEX can look at my tax returns and evaluate my "ability to pay my bills." I don't want to lose that line of credit, and I definitely will lose it if I refuse to comply. I think it's ridiculous they are asking for it, but apparently this "procedure" isn't all that uncommon. And it is real given my card is suspended and calling the main AMEX number also transferred me to this.

I did open a Chase Sapphire Preferred card in case AMEX decides I'm not worth it anymore.

I finally got a copy of my tax returns for AMEX. I have no idea how to read them, but I always have a net capital loss of over $30K every year and between $10-15K in capital gains. I'm not sure if that's how I factor in my tuition payments each year or what. But I'm pretty sure I'm going to lose my credit card with them unless they pay attention to my other assets or if I'm reading that wrong.

I wish I knew more about my own finances than I apparently do.

I'm volunteering to work at the Greek festival this weekend so I can embrace my life as a greasy Greek cook. This surely will not end well.

Day 7 of bar prep and I'm beginning to lose my social skills. I can't imagine how awkward I'm going to be when late July gets here.

3rd week of studying for the bar, and I've never wanted to die as badly as I do right now.

I stole a pen from the broker I use to trade stocks online a few months ago and tweeted about how awful the pen smelled the other day. Today, I received a nice pen in the mail from them with a note saying they hoped this one smelled better.

Good customer service. They'll keep me as a customer for a long time.

Life is just collapsing sound me. I haven't shaved since early May, and I'm having human interaction maybe once or twice a week. I've also adopted this 1 meal a day diet because I don't really have time to do anything otherwise. I have decided to start cooking some type of dish at the beginning of the week and living off that for a few days.

I'm a mess. This whole process is just insane.

Outpaced my target goal on my first practice MBE exam today. I'm not sure whether I should be happy or upset. I don't want to feel any sort of confidence for this bar exam.

Just grabbed dinner with Matt. Sh*t was fun.

I'm jealous.

I've spent my fourth studying for the bar. A girl friend of mine from college came to visit me last night and we stayed up all night messing around till like 5am. It was nice, but now it's back to the grind. At least I could take out my frustrations on her for 12 hours.

My mustache has gotten so long that I can no longer eat properly. I wish I could shave but I'm too afraid to upset the bar exam gods... RIP me

I leave to go take the bar tomorrow. At this point, I'm so exhausted I am just happy it will be all over on Wednesday night one way or the other.

Y'all discuss politics with girls? I've only been with far left/socialist girls sans one, so I wouldn't dare talk about things with them!

I'm so glad I don't have any women drama these days. I don't envy any of you. I just need to make sure each girl doesn't find out about the other! But no harm when nothing is official.

If a girl tells you she fantasizes about you constantly, and you aren't sure you want to date her, what should you do?

Yes, I've done her many times, I am a greek after all, it's what we do, but I'm not sure I want anything serious, and I worry if I keep doing her, she'll want that, and I'm just a mess right now, I drink too much, my sleep schedule is sporadic, I'm a lowly law clerk and I don't know if I passed the bar yet. I just don't know if I'm in the position to start something with a new girl, and she's the needy type.

Duke, you always seem to have this problem, but I am skeptical we are the people you should be asking...

Maybe not. I just don't know where to go from here.
