RIP.

I think my mom has a picture with her several decades ago. I should call her and ask what she thinks.

Latest Emnid poll has the AfD at 14% (record high for them) and the CDU at 32% (worst result in around 4 years). I guess the party conference hasn't really hurt the party. Ultimately this signals a tremendous shift in German politics. Parties such as the AfD can now be openly right-wing populist like their brethren in France, NL, or Austria. Remarkable...

Apart from the CDU -> AfD transfer clearly going on, on which we should be cautious because I'm not sure it would actually materialize in an actual federal election, has anyone noticed the Grünen's upward trend these last few polls ? Any explanation ?

The Greens are the most pro-refugee party, hence SPD voters (and to a minor degree CDU voters) that are against the EU-Turkey deal from a pro-refugee standpoint, would go to the Greens.

Altogether I think that the vote transfers are a little bit more complicated than just CDU -> AfD.
Besides CDU voters the AfD is attracting non-voters and voters of splinter parties. In the East also The Left voters and in the West some SPD voters.

When it comes to AfD gains materializing on the federal level, keep in mind that on the one hand voters are often using state elections for a protest vote, but on the other hand the AfD's main selling points are federal issues and federal elections tend to have high turnout which would mean even more politically disaffected people voting.

A recent report siad that Gabriel wants a contest for the chancellor candidate of the SPD. Due to the poor polling numbers, nobody wants to do the job.

tsssss… the chaos if black-red doesn't reach a national majority (which this poll claims we are two points away from!) will not be pleasant.

You'll simply get black-red-green -- if Merkel will still lead the CDU, that is.

LOL The federal SPD in its current state wouldn't survive a black-red-yellow coalition.

Well, if "others" are at 4% then black-red should still have a safe majority plus there might be some overhang seats for CDU/CSU.  Still, how long can this status quo go on where every election will just be CDU/CSU-SPD government.  Even if they grow the grand coalition this will only add to the strength of Linke and AfD.

the afd continues the ancient right-wing tradition of claiming the people they're constantly slandering and inciting violence against are just too emotional

Don't see what the problem is. The leader of the German Muslim Council thinks he's entitled to change the AfD program as he sees fit and simultaneously link the party to Hitler and the Holocaust. There really is no basis for discussion there.

30.5+19.5=50%, no?

That said, Go FDP!

Wonder if the CDU-Csu would be willing to form a coalition with AFD, even if it means much greater restriction of refugees

yes. a two-percent shift from 50/46 would make it 48/48

I know the words "fascist" and "Nazi" are thrown around by the left like they're going out of business but it would suit you and your ilk well to take a step back and look at what you are actually saying when you're accusing the AfD of being a Third Reich party. You are implying that the AfD advocates or would at least tacitly support the murder/forced deportation of 4 million Muslims in Germany. Think about that for a moment. That is a ridiculous charge. As a matter of fact I think anyone making such a claim should get their ass sued for libel. The AfD is right to take such an uncompromising stance on the issue. It's time to stop the casual accusation of perfectly decent people as Nazis.

Well, they are ready to shot any Muslim getting near the border. It's barely a step further.
