In 1916, Elihu Root has an impressive resume as a Republican statesman: McKinley's Sec of War, TR's Sec of State, and then Senator from New York. A winner of the Nobel Prize for his skillful work in international arbitration, he was also been a key player in advancing imperialist policies in his Cabinet posts and is now an advocate for entry into World War.  He is a member of the party's conservative wing but has supported some progressive policies such as the income tax.

IRL, Root felt he was too old for the presidency and so did not seek it, yet still had considerable support at the convention.  Let's suppose he is willing and wins the nomination (perhaps Hughes is unwilling to give up his position on the Court).  Who wins the VP nomination - Fairbanks, or someone else?  Do the Progressives run their own ticket?  Wilson and Marshall run for reelection, and the Socialists and Prohibitionists run as well.
