The Baptists were originally very liberal and tolerant. I go to a Baptist church in Vero that is pro gay marriage, and has a few lesbian couples in a very socially conservative city. I wish more churches were like that.

While I personally don't have any issue with denominations issuing decrees governing clergy, I'm surprised that the Southern Baptist Convention would be able to pull this off. After all Baptists don't exactly love hierarchy and there have been numerous episodes where they've chafed against denominational authority.

Also, it's a minor pet peeve for me when people call the Southern Baptist Convention that Baptists or the Baptist Church. It's not the freaking RCC and the Southern Baptist Convention barely has a majority among Baptists in America. They certainly don't speak for all Baptists.

Yeah.  The Southern Baptists seem determined to abandon the Baptist heritage of individual thought and responsibility.  Indeed, they really ought to find another name for their church.  They may be Southern, but they aren't particularly Baptist any longer. They certainly aren't the same group that condemned Landmarkism.
