On the Democratic Side Clinton and Obama do not run, and Bill Richardson beats out John Edwards for the nomination.

On the GOP side Huckabee does not run, Thompson puts some effort into his primary campaign, and defeats John McCain and Mitt Romney in a grueling three-way fight

Wouldn't Richardson's scandals have been a major albatross on his campaign?

Assuming Richardson stayed in despite the scandals, I think it would have been a major blow to his campaign. Granted, they didn't come up until after the campaign IRL, but with the prospects of him being President soon, I would imagine it would surface a little sooner.

While Thompson proved to not be a great campaigner, he's pretty likeable and not too controversial - I expect him to win by a comfortable margin, which also limits the Democratic gains in Congress.
